Who I Am, To Him (1/1)
“Junhyung, who am I, to you?”Junhyung seemed to be taken aback with my question, but he soon regained his composure, he had his smile back on his lips. But he didn’t say anything back.“Are you going to play mute again?”If he was going to refuse to answer my question, I would pick up my butt and left. And yet again, he kept his silence. “I think I better head in. My parents are probably waiting for me, for breakfast. I’ll see you around, Junhyung.”I stood up, but before I could dust off the sand at my bottom, he grabbed my hand and pulled me down.“I’m ready to answer all your questions. So don’t go yet.”His eyes were clear, I guessed he really meant what he said.“All... All of my questions? That will be a lot.”He smiled, his smile was sincere. He nodded, so I decided to stay.“Let’s clear this, once and for all.”And I took my place beside him. “So... what do you want to know?”He was playing with a stick he found on the sand, eyes away from me.“I want to know why you are treating me like this.”I was looking at him, analysing his every moves. He didn’t seem to be affected by my question. He must have expected it. He locked his eyes on me.“How am I treating you?”Did he really didn’t know how he was treating me?“You... You are like that Katty Perry song, Junhyung.”He looked at me in amazement.“What? Katty Perry?”“Hey, I don’t just listen to Kpop, okay? But my point is, you changed your attitude around me a lot. One minute you were warm to me, and then another minute you turned cold. You gave me so many mixing signals, and you left me in confusion too many times. I don’t certainly know if we are friends, if we are merely classmates, or actually, we are nothing at all.”He threw the misshapen stick to the ground.“We are not nothing at all.”“Then what are we? Who am I to you, Junhyung?” He looked at me, his gaze was intense. He got the answer within him, but I could see that he was calculating, whether to reveal it to me, or not. And the tension was killing me. He soon heaved in a deep breath, shifted himself into a more comfortable position, and he gave me the most confusing answer to date.“You are my sunshine, Hani,” his eyes looked gloom, “... if I were a vampire.” I bet bewilderment was written all over my face.“Cou-- Could you explain?”He gave me a small smile, and his eyes left mine.“Do you know that I was under a spell?”Okay, that was totally unexpected.“What nonsense are you talking about, Junhyung?”“Well, not literally a spell, but that is the best word to describe the situation I’m in.”He pulled up his legs, and he crossed his arms against his knees, again heaving a deep breath, keeping his eyes on the sea. He looked almost vulnerable like that.“The guys told me that I was under a spell. That I couldn’t seem to open my heart to anybody, even though I am already 17. When my friends were all over girls, flirting and playing and sometimes went on dates, I found their behaviour amusing and a waste of time, because I never felt attracted to any girl I saw.”He paused, and gave a quick peek at me.“Well, until you came in the picture.” I couldn’t say anything, but my heart was pumping crazily. I felt my face little by little became warm. He did fell for me. “We were classmates for as long as I can remember, but I never really paid attention to you, not before we were assigned as partners in English. Do you remember what was the first thing you say to me when we received our first assignment?”What did I said back then?“You said, ‘Yah, if you ditch me and left me doing this thing alone, I’ll kill you, Yong Junhyung!’”He smiled at the memory.“So, you like me because I said I’d kill you?”Did that make any sense?“Hahaha! No, of course not. But after you said that, you gave me the brightest smile I have ever seen in my life, Hani. That smile of yours caught me off guard. At that moment, I said to myself, ‘The spell has broken.’” Here goes my crazy heart, again. “But, then, what’s with the vampire and sunshine resemblance?”He finally shifted his gaze from the sea, and rested his eyes on me. He rested his chin on his arm, and he looked at me for the longest time. There was unreadable gentleness in his eyes that made me felt uneasy. “You are someone I longed for, Lee Hani, but you are also someone I don’t think I’ll ever get to be with.”
