Invitation (1/1)
Xiumin woke up extremely early, feeling the need to get to work and get the files in his office so that he could get this job over and done with and then go home again. He also wanted to make sure that the boss didn’t see him, just in case.He felt that today would be different from every other day, he could just feel it. He was quick to get ready; throwing on his jacket and his black bandana in his back pocket before grabbing his bag and throwing it over his shoulder. He looked around the house with his hand on the doorknob. The house looked horrible; although it was clean (as clean as it could have) it looked as if no one really lived here. It was an old ground floor apartment, it was slowly caving in, the roof was obviously bowing, along with the various self-made patches that covered (semi-covered) the holes in the ceiling. During the winter time he would have to cover them with old blankets just in case it snowed. It wasn’t really livable but it still had water and electricity (for now). Technically he was living here illegally, but seeing as how the owners never checked the building he was safe.He looked around the living room, the floor torn, the floorboards showing beneath places in the carpet. The couch was falling apart, one leg propped up with old newspapers. It was an ugly orange with various stains from sitting outside in the weather before he had carted it off. The wooden stand where the TV sat was lopsided, which cause it to tip sideways. Most of the objects in the house had been salvaged from the dumpsters or off the street after being thrown out because they were no longer needed; but nothing was stolen so he assumed he had a clean record. He shook his head as he closed the door behind him. It was sad really, he didn’t think that he would ever live this way, but here he was. As he stepped outside he noticed that it was so early that the crickets were still chirping, although the sun was just breaking over the horizon. He took a deep breath and suddenly something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention. He looked across the street; there was a girl sitting in the front yard of the bakery. It was kind of difficult for him to see at first but his eyes slowly adjusted and he saw that she was smiling and laughing while she played with a dog that ran in circles around her before tackling her and licking her face zealously. It looked to be a Corgi but he wasn’t really for sure. If he had to guess, he would assume that she was around his age, if not a little younger than him. He knew that he had seen her before, only every other time she had a different colored hair. This time it was purple. He pulled on his bag as he began to walk. He saw her look up and smile but didn’t move apart from petting the dog that sat exhausted in her lap. He walked on quickly. He was on a mission.~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ He dropped by Baeks’ coffee shop, picking up the same thing he did every day for his boss, before heading to work. When he arrived at work the city had a subtle glow across the streets and buildings. The elevator ride seemed to take forever, he was beginning to get ancy; finally elevator door “dinged” and he stepped out.No one really looked up as he walked through the main section of the department and to his office. As he walked into his office he noticed everything was in place as always, in addition to the new file that sat on his desk. This was the same everyday so he was used to it by now. He dropped his stuff by the inside of the door, turning on his computer and sitting down. The file search was quick and easy, seeing as how this gang had bought “supply” from the Dom before. He only knew because he had to be a “runner” once before when one had opted out by being sick. He remembered that the guy who had bought the “supply” seemed to be a nice, happy guy with a bubbly personality; but then again, he was probably on drugs at the time Xiumin found that the place he was supposed to go was closer than the last one, so he assumed that it would be a quicker job. He shut off his computer, taking the coffee into his bosses office, writing the same thing he did as every day on the sticky note, setting the cup in the same place before walking out, snatching up his bag as he hurried his way out of the office building. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~He found that the building itself was actually a building (unlike most the places he went). This one looked like a nice office building, only about four stories high but in nice condition. In a way he thought it looked very modern and retro themed. There was a fountain outside the front of the building, surrounded by a circular walkway. He was dressed professionally for this job because it was part of the high society, so if he dressed like he usually did on a job he would’ve stood out like a sore thumb; and the point was to blend in as much as possible. He walked up to the building, his hair brushed neatly, and his suit fitting to his body perfectly. He looked like a high class business man. And this place, this place was his scene (for right now anyway). No one even spared him a second glance as he practically strutted his way through the lobby of the building, his head held high like he worked there every day and this was the same routine. He walked up to the receptionist desk, the receptionist looking up at his as she waited for whatever he was going to say.“Annyeonghaseyo,” he tipped his head in greeting, “I’m here to see…” he pulled out the piece of paper from his pocket with a name written on it. “… Mr. Rawson.”“Oh, yes. Mr. Rawson is in.” She motioned towards the elevator door, “top floor, last door on the left.” She smiled as he thanked her, tipping his head quickly before going to the elevator. Why couldn’t Chen have hired a women secretary instead of me?’ He asked himself, but then again, if he hadn’t have hired him then Xiumin would be out of a job.He felt weird riding in an elevator all dressed up. He was so used to wearing normal clothing, being in a building for only a couple minutes, and then leaving right after he had what he needed.Once he arrived at his floor he all but practically jumped out of the elevator, the calming music was killing him.As he looked around he noticed that very few people (unlike at the ChenMin company) were actually walking around; It seemed like the place was deserted. He looked straight down the hall and it was obvious that the office at the end of the hallway belonged to Mr. Rawson.Xiumin casually walked up to the door, knocking lightly. “Mr. Rawson.” He tried his best to sound casual yet professional. There was an extended silence before the door opened slowly. When the door was completely open a round man with a big smile stepped forward.“Ah! Red hair, nice to see you again.” He embraced Xiumin in a bone crushing hug. When the man pulled back Xiumin tried not to look disgusted but he knew that the smile on his face was awkward. This man seemed more than happy to see him. In a way he found it kind of unsettling. “Come in come in.” He gestured Xiumin to follow him into the room before shutting the door behind him before he walked over and sat down at his desk; the smile never leaving his face as he motioned for Xiumin to sit down across from him.He took a seat, not knowing what to do. He was here for documents, not a nice chat with a mobster. He told himself over and over again.“I don’t think that I had scheduled for anything to be delivered today.” The man tapped his chin as he thought. By “anything” he meant the drugs that were delivered to him every week.“Oh no no,” Xiumin laughed flakily; but convincingly enough for the man sitting across to not look worried anymore. “The Dom just sent me because he wanted me to read the records of our “exchanges” between companies.” He sat forward a little, the other man leaning in too. “You know, the normal “I’ll check on you stuff as always.” He chuckled as he “joked”, the other man laughing too.“Ah yes, I know he likes to keep things in top order.” He leaned forward, putting a hand to the side of his mouth as he lowered his voice, “not to mention, he runs a psychotically tight ship.”“Oh I know,” Xiumin rolled his eyes, “but shh, don’t tell him I said that.” He chuckled again with the man who said, “I won’t tell if you don’t tell.”“Deal.” He smiled. The man sitting across from him seemed satisfied with the answer as he began to unlock his bottom drawer, “so what is it exactly that you need to see?” He pulled out a folder and set it on the desk.“Just shipment with values and prices, and the amount, like a simple spread sheet.” He noticed that people who worked for The Dom seemed to trust his workers beneath him unconditionally. Not that he was complaining right now, but it did seem odd that they trusted a mans’ goonies just because of the mans’ reputation.Nodding, the man pulled out a couple of stapled papers and set them in front of Xiumin as he searched for other things pertaining much of the same information. Xiumin began to scan over the document, slowly flipping back and forth as if he was really studying it, which he actually wasn’t; he was taking in what the man in front of him was doing.“Well, I think this is all of it.” The man pulled out on last document, handing it to Xiumin before standing up. “Please excuse me, I need to use the restroom for a moment, I shall be right back.” Xiumin nodded.“Would it be alright if I look at these while you’re gone?” he knew he had to play the innocent who was only working for The Dom, not a person who had his own agenda or they would catch on and he would probably be killed.“Yes, of course.” The man chuckled, “just don’t leave while I’m gone.” Xiumin chuckled too and nodded before the man walked out, closing the door securely behind him.Xiumin waited until he no longer heard the mans’ steps before he took action. As he made his way to the other side of the desk he noticed that bottom drawer where the man had pulled out the file sitting on the desk had been left open, the key still in the lock, all the other documents clearly visible. He rifled through the files, making sure to keep everything in place so that it looked exactly as the man had left it, so as to not raise any suspicion. He thought it was funny, but also stupid that almost all the mobsters he had stolen important documents from had kept their most important information in the bottom right hand drawer of their desks in their offices. Yes he had had the occasional few who kept theirs in a closet or in some cases, an expensive looking; vase but the majority hid them in their desk.“Ah ha!” he whispered to himself, pulling out the document he was looking for. It was perfect evidence to send this mobster to jail in a matter of hours instead of days like most of the normal cases. He looked up suddenly when he heard the sound of gunshots sounding from the hallway he had entered the room from. He knew that shit was going down on the other side of that closed door and he did NOT want to be a part of it.“We’re here to take you’re profits and supply.” A gruff voice sounded on the other side of the door, accompanied by a shuffling noise like someone struggling.“Please let me go,” a woman’s voice was barely above a whisper, “We don’t have anything, p-ple—,” suddenly another gunshot sounded, and the sound of a body hitting the floor echoed throughout the silence of the office. Xiumin stayed ducked down behind the desk for fear of being discovered. He had to get out and soon, or else he would be dead too.“Round up the others, we’ll need them later; right now we just need the files.” It sounded like the gruff voice was talking to more than one other. He gasped inwardly as he heard the mention of files, and he just knew that this was the room where they would be getting those files. He quickly stuffed what he had into his bag and slowly crawled towards the window, opening it slowly as to not make any noise. Once it was open he climbed out, hopping onto the thin ledge just below the window, holding onto the pipes that happened to be there. He slowly closed down the window, only leaving an inch of it left open. He saw the door handle jiggle and he quickly ducked down.As he listened closely he heard the shuffling of feet, not only one, but two peoples’ feet. He could hear as they walked right over to the place where he had been only seconds ago.“Damn it!” one cussed, kicking something in the room, sending it flying to hit the far wall. “They’re not here. Either they’re with that bastard or someone else got to them before we did, and I’m positive that the first option is no.”“Come one, let’s go, maybe if we’re lucky he will still be in the building and we can rip them from his cold dead fingers after we kill him.” They both chuckled together, before heading towards the door. Xiumin let out a pent up breath in relief, he was still alive and in one piece. Suddenly there was a cranking noise and the thin platform beneath his feet began to give way. This did not go unnoticed by the people in the room who immediately ran over and threw open the window to reveal Xiumin falling from where he stood. He desperately tried to grab onto something as he fell. His heart was racing at full speed but his brain was clear and he knew that there was distance between him and the ground from the top floor, he could do something. He heard gunfire and realized as a bullet went whizzing past his head that he was being shot at from above. As he fell he pulled his bag from his shoulder, as he passed one of the sections in the walls that jutted out he threw the shoulder strap towards one. It caught and he was suddenly being propelled forward into a glass window. He broke through, shattering the glass before rolling on the ground, then jumping to his feet, throwing his bag over his shoulder as he took off for the stairs, not paying any attention to the people around him. Screw the elevator; he didn’t want to die today. He practically slammed the door open as he ran as fast as he could to get out. Those people were still in the building, and heading down this very instant to see if he had made it to the bottom or plummeted to his death. And he was pretty sure that they were thinking the second one since he had fallen from the fourth floor.Instead of actually running down the stairs he knew his clothes were slick enough, so he hopped on the hand rails and slid down. Before he knew it he was at ground floor. He didn’t spare the secretary in the lobby a second glace as he ran silently passed everyone in the lobby and out the front doors, just as he reached them he heard shouting behind him and he knew that the people who had shown up in the office were now following him. He needed to get out of this quick if he wanted to save his skin. He smiled as a thought crossed his mind; he knew exactly where to go.If there was anything more confusing than mazes and hanging laundry the downtown part of the city was perfect. He felt his pursuers hot on his trail as he made his way into the maze of sheets and clothing. He could tell, as his pursuers followed him through the sheets that they had no idea where they were going, and they were just making the best guesses. Finally he made it to the other side, hearing the people following him cussing as they had gotten lost and couldn’t find their way out. He smiled as he ran down to the next shop (which just happened to be a clothing store) and ran inside to the changing rooms. He quickly changed from his black attire to a simple t-shirt and jeans with cap. He turned his bag inside out, stuffing the documents into a secret compartment. Luckily the bag was reversible. He looked around the store a little before walking out of the store. Suddenly two men ran into him, knocking him to the ground. He saw the guns in their hands and knew these were his pursuers. They didn’t look much younger than him. They both apologized and helped him back up asking if they had seen a man running in a general direction. He lied and told them no. They didn’t ask him anymore questions, just thanked him and ran on as he began to walk the opposite direction of them.He smiled at his wittiness as he walked. He really needed something that would build up his stamina after all that running, with that he headed towards Baeks’ coffee shop. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~As he casually strolled up to the shop the same familiar and smiling face greeted him as it did every morning. They had their regular greeting but this time Xiumin didn’t have to leave right away so he stood by the shop talking to Baekhyun between the ordering customers.“So,” Baekhyun leaned forward on the counter, resting his chin on his hands, “are you doing anything this weekend?”Xiumin thought about it for a second. On his way over he had gotten a call from Kyungsoo, one of the shipment experts (in The Doms’ mob) who he was pretty good friends with and he had invited him to go to the new club that had just opened a couple weeks ago that had drawn a lot of attention and was very popular. He had said he was undecided at the time and that he would tell him later his answer, but now that he thought about it, almost everyone he knew was going so he thought he might as well too.“Not really,” Xiumin leaned against the counter, “Are you busy on Saturday?”“I don’t think so,” Baekhyun tapped his finger against his chin before he straighten up again, “Nope, I’m totally free, why?” He smiled.“Well, there’s a party on Saturday at that new club NSOD, I was wondering if you would want to go with me and just chill together so I’m not alone.” He laughed at how desperate he sounded right now.Baekhyun seemed to brighten instantly, “Really? Sure! I would love to go. What time is it?”“7:30 PM.” Xiumin said matter-of-factly .“Is there a certain dress code?” Baekhyuns’ face looked totally disgusted by this thought.Xiumin laughed, “Oh no. not at all.”“Oh goodie.” Baekhyun smiled.Xiumin sipped his coffee when suddenly out of the corner of his eye he saw someone slowly walking up to the coffee hut. Xiumin nonchalantly leaned against the counter as the man walked up. it was the man he had run into the other day with the big glasses and bright eyes.“Annyeonghaseyo.” Baeukhyun smiled as he greeted the boy like he did every other customer, “what would you like today?”Xiumin watched as the man stepped up to the counter, looking up at the board. He turned to look at him and suddenly the man turned to look at him, his stare intense. Xiumin didn’t know what to do so he just stood there, unmoving as they locked eyes for a moment.“I’ve never been here before so I don’t know what’s good.” The guy said bluntly.“No problem.” The Baekhyun smiled, “My favorites are this one, this one, this and this one.” he pointed to different popular ones on the board. There was a moment of awkward silence, Xiumin didn’t know who to look at so his eyes stayed focused on the man that seemed unable to order coffee. He stepped forward pointing to what he had just ordered, “Choose that one, I think it’s pretty good.” “Okay. I’ll take that one.” Baekhyun just smiled and nodded before turning around and beginning to make the coffee.“Thanks.” The guy turned to Xiumin. “I don’t usually order my own coffee so I don’t really know what to get.” The guy ran a hand over the back of his hair awkwardly but Xiumin found it kind of cute how embarrassed he seemed.“It’s okay.” Xiumin smiled holding back a laugh. “You’ll probably get used to it.”Finally the sound of the blender stopped and Baekhyun handed the boy his coffee with a smile. Thanking him and telling him that if he liked it to give him a good reference and to come back later. When Xiumin assumed that Baekhyun was done flirting with his customer he turned to him. “Remember what I told you Baek.” He took a sip of his coffee.“Saturday, 7:30 right?” Baekhyun asked.Xiumin nodded “Its downtown you say? Is it hard to find?” Baekhyun asked.“Right, no, it’s not hard at all, just look for the big gigantic letters; they’re hard to miss really. What I told you was just the abbreviation but since nothing else had the same letters it’s easy to know exactly which building it is.” Xiumin explained and Baekhyun nodded. “Well I have to go now; I have work to attend to.” Xiumin chuckled with Baekhyun.“Have a good day Xiuy!” Baek called as Xiumin was walking away.“I told you to stop calling me that!” Xiumin called back, walking backwards. “See you later Baek!” He waved before turning around and walking on his way. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Xiumins’ day was long as he travelled back and forth for the Dom, delivering certain documents to certain important people. When he was finally done with that, he found himself meeting up with Kyungsoo to go shopping for some new clothes for the party on Saturday. Kyungsoo had directly told him that he had no fashion sense except when it came to wearing clothes to fit in with the gangs on the street; which in this case, was not a compliment. At the end of the day he found himself flopping down on his bed and passing out, his excitement for the party on Saturday swirling through his brain again and again even as he dreamed, Saturday couldn’t come soon enough.~~~HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!! for all those who celebrate it... and those who don't.
