Epic Date is Epic (1/1)
December 4, Key I went to the house early. And I mean, really early. She was still asleep when I entered the room. Can’t blame her, it was still seven in the morning. The room was dim. I didn’t turn on the lights, because I didn’t want to wake her up just yet. As usual, her hair was scattered all over her face while sleeping. Don’t forget the snoring and drooling.I went to her closet and opened it. I gasped when I saw her clothes—most of which were short pants. Very impractical for the cold weather. Probably HyunMi thought she wasn’t gonna stay here until December.Time to pick. I chose her clothes. I picked up a pair of shorts, a shirt, stockings, and a thick overcoat. Well at least HyunMi improved in her style. I put the clothes on the couch so she could see them immediately.I spent thirty minutes trying to wake her up. Not in a harsh way, though—I did it subtly. What’s the next scariest thing to Brute HyunMi is Just-Woke-Up Brute HyunMi. I poked her arms, shaking her lightly, and combed her hair with my hands. I must admit, I enjoyed the last one.I went to the vacant space of the bed and lied there. I folded my arms. “Wake up already,” I finally said to the person under the covers. “I’ve been here for half an hour.”Of course she didn’t answer.“HyunMi~” I put my mouth on her ear and whispered. “Ow!” I covered my eye when she punched me.Finally, her alarm clock rang.“Ya, Moon HyunMi, wake up. Your alarm’s ringing. And I am not going to snooze that thing.”Her arm instantly shot out from under the cover and went across my face.BAM!She slammed her alarm clock, and it stopped ringing. I was worried for a while it won’t work anymore.“How many alarm clocks have you broken already?” I laughed. “Don’t you know how to snooze it?”She shifted her position and faced me.“Get off my bed,” she said in a raspy, sleepy voice.“I won’t. unless you get up.”“See that alarm clock? That’s what will happen to you if you don’t get off. NOW.”“Aish!” I stood up. “GET UP ALREADY!” I pulled the covers out.“Can’t we just go later? It’s so cozy here,” she shielded her head with a pillow.“No! I’ve got tons of activities planned out for today!”“Go and do them all yourself.”“Are you stupid or what? Can’t you notice I’m asking you out on a DATE?”“I’M NOT GOING!” she screamed, which came out as a muffle from under the pillow.“Heh,” I snickered, smirking. I know how to get this girl done. “Or we could just…” I went back to the bed and lied down. “…have our date here. Who knows, something might even happen,”“GET OUT BEFORE I KILL YOU!” she yelled while kicking, which I evaded wisely.“Don’t worry. I don’t bite. Or at least…not that hard,” I continued teasing.“THAT’S IT. YOU HAVE ASKED FOR YOUR DEATH.”I’d like to give you a mental picture when HyunMi said that. Imagine Sadako being brown curly-haired. Her eyes are a bit swollen because she just woke up. Cute? HAHAHAHAHA. NO.“Ow! Ya! Stop that!” if before, what she used to attack me was pillow, now it’s the mattress of her very own bed.“GET OUT!”“FINE. I will.” I said, the mattress right on my face. “But make sure that when you go out of this room, you’re already dressed up, or else—“ I pushed the mattress to one side to see her face. I traced a finger from her throat to her chin. “—something will happen.”“OKAY!!! JUST GET OUT!” she roared.I turned and headed for the door. Before I went out, I said, teasing yet again, “I’d appreciate a little hurry, jagi,”I went down the stairs, failing to stop my smug smiles. Seduction drives Moon HyunMi mad. I waited in the lobby.“Key-ssi? You’re here? Why, so early!” So Eul-noona came out of the kitchen wearing her robe, carrying a mug of hot chocolate.“I’m waiting for HyunMi, noona.”“Oh? Where are you two going?”“We’re going to buy the materials. Noona, when are you and hyung gonna buy it?”“Maybe this week, Key. My partner’s been busy,” she sat beside me. Thirty minutes passed.“Seriously, HyunMi? Seriously? I don’t even take that long to dress up!” I grumbled, climbing up the stairs again. “HEY, ARE YOU DOING A CONCERT THERE? WHAT’S TAKING YOU SO LONG?” I opened the door, and…oh.She was frowning.“AHA. I see what you did there. Wanting to dress up nicely, huh?” I chuckled. “HyunMi, did you do this when you and Dongwoon had a date?”She glanced at the mirror, checking her reflection. “Only when we had the dinner-date,”she replied rather calmly. She was going to remove the ribbon that tied her hair in a single ponytail on the side of her head but I stopped her.“No! Don’t. You look nice in that,” I stepped closer to her. “HyunMi,”“Yeah?” I felt the mint-breath coming from her mouth on my face. We were standing a bit too close.“Your hair’s gone longer now,” I smiled.“It has?” She pouted, glancing at the mirror again.“Yeah. I must say, you rather look pretty on it,”Her expression changed thrice in a single second. First she blushed, then blinked in incredulity, and lastly, her mouth was open in utter surprise. After all three she scrambled, frantically looking for something in my pockets.“Hey! What’re you doing?”“Just checking out where all those compliments are coming from,” she answered.I snorted, but I was laughing. “Babo,” I bonked her head. “Come on. We’ve got a date to do,”She rolled her eyes. About nine in the morning Miss Lee arrived and cheerfully greeted us, “The morning is good! Who’s gonna buy the materials today? Come with me,”We followed her and we stopped by at the East Wing lobby where the others were waiting.“Did you guys have breakfast already?” Miss Lee asked.“We did, but I’d like to take HyunMi out for coffee. It’s a chilly morning,” I answered.“Bye guys! Have fun!” So Eul-noona waved us off.“Thanks for wishing us good on our date, noona!” I waved back.“Kibum, before my day even started you already ruined it.” HyunMi said grimly without looking at me.“Don’t worry. We’re not going back to this house without you smiling,” I replied coolly.“Please give me the strength not to strangle this person beside me.” I heard her mumble. “GOOD MORNING PEOPLE!” Yu Na popped out, waving her arms in the air.HyunMi hurriedly went to her and hugged her, and HyunMi said something in her ear I didn’t know what, but Yu Na just grinned at me. “You’re lucky, HyunMi. Your partner’s here,” one of the other painters said when we piled in the van.“You don’t know what you’re saying,” HyunMi replied in a pained, exasperated voice. HyunMi~ D: I was in a really bad mood my thoughts were turning violent. We’re just going to buy the materials, why is he calling it a date? That guy is clearly insane.Look, I may have realized something just recently but that doesn’t mean I’m right. See, he’s nothing but a terrible flirt.I was still being bothered by everything that were happening this passed few days. And Kibum’s not doing me a favor by bringing me out, calling it a date.First, my umma being in the hospital. Again. Second, something Seongjin told me last night. I was peacefully reading a book in the lobby last night when he approached me.“HyunMi-ssi?”“Good evening, Seongjin,”“I have a question.”I flipped it to the next page. I hate being disturbed from my reading, but being with Seongjin right now, I kept my cool. “Yes, what is it?”
“Have you ever had a boyfriend?”I chuckled, not lifting my gaze off the page. “Why the sudden interest? Well, truth be told, yes.”“Oh? Where is he now?”Yes, he did hit a nerve. The pain the death of my ex caused was still lurking inside me. “He’s gone, Seongjin,”“What do you mean?” his usual stern demeanor was rocked by confusion.“He killed himself,” I replied nonchalantly, now annoyed.“Oh. I’m sorry,” he adjusted his glasses, clearing his throat. “How’s the moving-on process going?” “Great,” I replied.“Been harboring feelings for someone else?” he raised a brow, obviously being snarky.Really. Ask one more question and I’m going to shove this book in your mouth. “What kind of feelings?”“You know what I’m talking about,”“I’m afraid I can’t answer that, Seongjin.”“Why not?”BECAUSE I DON’T LIKE TALKING TO PEOPLE WHO BUTT IN IN OTHER PEOPLE’S AFFAIRS LIKE YOU. “I don’t know the answer too, myself,”He smirked. “You’re going back to Los Angeles after this, right?”I nodded.“You will be separated soon, yes?”“I know, don’t rub it in,” my voice was getting low. I was starting to fail in concealing my irritation.“What is he for you, HyunMi-ssi?” brighter than sunshine, this guy was taunting me.I clutched the book tightly in my hand, calculating how much force I am going to apply in ramming this book down his throat. “He’s my…partner. My friend,”He broke into a hearty peal of laughter, which I was confused if it came out of amusement or sarcasm. “Chill, I was just teasing you,” he laughed some more. Well, good job teasing me. You were tactless, though. He cleared his throat, and resumed his usual serious face. “I just wanted to, ah, let’s say, give you a friendly advice. He’s famous, and some girls will just throw themselves at him. I just don’t want anyone here getting hurt,” he bowed as he added, “Good night, Miss Moon,” and went back to his room. Okay.I was speechless.Really. What I realized not so long ago was just a mistake. He may be flirting with me, but that doesn’t mean he likes me. Even if he’s acting jealous sometimes. It could be just… he’s… territorial.Because, even if that was true, who am I kidding? I’m HyunMi. He’s Key. Think of it that way, so there’d be less pain when you leave. I said to myself, as something wet and round appeared on the page of the book. KEEEEEY.We were dropped in front of a café with only a few people.“Where are you people going?” I asked Yu Na who walked to a different direction.“We’ll just see you later,” she replied, and walked away. We were receiving glances from people when we entered. I nudged HyunMi with my elbow.“Ow,” she looked up at me.“You okay?”She rubbed her nape. “Well…not really,”I frowned in disappointment. “It’ll be okay. Sit over there, “ I pointed a table by the window.“Arasseo…” She sighed. I headed to the counter, and ordered us drinks. All of the salesladies were gawking at me when I ordered, wondering who I was with. One lady had the guts to finally speak up. “Um, who’s that?”I glanced over my shoulder and eyed the girl resting her chin on her hand, half-asleep with dreaminess. “Ah, My partner, noona. It’s a long story. But promise me you’ll keep this a secret, okay? Don’t worry, she’s not my girlfriend,” I said. She’s not. Just yet. “Thanks,” HyunMi took the cup and sipped. It was too hot, she scorched her tongue.“Careful! Aish, really. This girl!”She fanned her mouth. “What’s yours?”“Americano,”She felt her tongue for a while, and, “How’d you know I wanted chocolate?”“It’d be a rhetorical question if I asked you.” I smiled.HyunMi bowed her head, as if abashed. “I see,”“Oh, look… HyunMi’s flattered! Really, HyunMi. After two months, you still doubt my knowledge of you?”“Uh…well…ugh, don’t start!” she lightly kicked me under the table.A waiter appeared on the side of our table, arriving with my order. “Is your order complete, sir?” he put the saucer on the table. I nodded, and he went off.“Here,” I handed her a fork.“What’s that?”“Cheese cake,”Her face lit up.“I know you want it,”She timidly cut a piece and ate it. “Yummy,” she chortled. “Don’t you want some?” she moved the saucer towards me.“Give me some.”“Get your fork.”“No. I said give me some,” I opened my mouth and pointed it.“No way. You’re not even my boyfriend.” She folded her arms.I snickered. “Haven’t you noticed that I almost am?”She closed her face into mine and said flatly, “No.”“Aish, just feed me already! Ahh~” I made the gesture again.“No.”“Come on!”“No.”“Aish!”“You didn’t say please.”“Please?”“No.”“What do you want?!”“Say it sincerely! Do some aegyo,” she smirked.“Ppuing, ppuing,” I put my clenched fists on my cheeks and rubbed them against it.“Ew. Okay, okay. You can stop now.” She cut a piece. “But this will be the first and last time,”I stooped my head near the fork to receive the food. “Ahh~” but she detoured the route and it went straight to her mouth.“Aish!”She laughed, but as she swallowed, she choke.I laughed at her face. She coughed, and when she was able to speak, “WHATEVER.”I got the fork from her hand and ate a piece.“Hey that’s my—““—you wouldn’t feed me, so I fed myself,”She slapped her forehead. “You just love driving me mad, don’t you,”“That’s what I’m good at,”She stood up and asked for another fork. When the cake was already in half she brought out a pen and asked, “Do you have a paper?”“Do I look like I’m carrying one?”She pouted. She looked around for any means of resource and exclaimed, “Oh, this!” she snatched a piece of tissue and wrote the word ‘abstract’ on it. “Table for suggestions is now open,” she declared.“I was thinking of a detailed painting,” I answered, and took another sip from my cup.She tilted her head to one side. “Detailed?”“Well, a painting that is, when looked at from afar, looks like an ordinary painting, but when you look closely, it’s made of words. It’s like a mosaic made of words,” I described, with the majestic motion of the hands. “So what do you think?”She nodded and clapped soundlessly. “You’re a genius, I must admit,”“I know,” I laughed. We did some further discussions after that, and what we have agreed upon about the picture quite resembled our case. The word ‘abstract’ on the tissue paper was soon crashed out with a strikethrough, and it was replaced by ‘mosaic’. Our next stop was a toy-store. Goodness knows what we were doing there, but I just wanted to make the most out of our date. She kept on insisting that we buy the materials already but I never listened. “HyunMi-ya,” I whispered when we entered the store.“Hmm? Oh, look! A unicorn! It’s so fluffy~”“I’m sorry I can’t give you a normal date that you’d like,” I grumbled.“I’m sorry, what was that again?”I shook my head. “Nothing. I said we’d go…there. Come on,” I grabbed her hand and walked to the area I was pointing to. “Moon HyunMi~” I voiced over a teddy bear and showed it to her.She smiled and looked up at me. “Kibum-ah,”“Ye?”“Don’t,” she removed her hand out of mine first. “Many people are watching,”I was confused whether she was embarrassed because many people were watching, or because she didn’t like me holding her hand.“Ah, wait. Stay here, I’ll look for something,” she walked to another rack of stuffed toys.I paid attention to her the whole time she stood there. She’d examine each toy she picked. She made faces at it, bobbed its head, or make a little war out of to toys.I daydreamed of painting her.“Look, this one looks like Roo!” she showed me something.“Yeah.” I suddenly remembered Jjong-hyung, who wouldn’t stop teasing me when I told them HyunMi and I were going on a date. I got another toy from the rack, and gave it to her. “Give this to your brother,”“But I want to be the one who—““—that’s not from you. That’s from me,”She covered her mouth and laughed breathlessly. “Okay. But why a panda?”“Bears are just too ordinary,” I shrugged. We went to the counter to pay for it. “Hey, don’t you want one?”She shook her head. “Teddy bears? Nope. I like pillows more,”“Alright, wait here,” I hurriedly went to a part where they put the pillows. I picked one the color of light blue. It was so big I had to embrace it with both arms.“Seriously?” HyunMi widened her eyes.“I’m gonna use this during the sleep-over on the painting week,” I said coolly.“Oh. I thought…”“That it’s for you? Well, it is. But I’ll exploit it for a while before you leave,”“O…kay…” HYUNMI!We went out of the toy store and went to ten more stores. He bought me a new pair of shoes, some dresses, and bought a jacket that matched one he owned. Really, Kibum? Really? I then just realized that the guy I am with right now is actually a shopaholic. My feet were already aching, and I was carrying all the bags. Finally, we have bought the materials. We took out some food from a restaurant and walked to a playground where only a few people were. When we were walking to it he asked, “Did your friends in LA have a nickname for you?”“Yup. ‘cause they always mispronounce my name,”“Oh? What is it?”“You’ll laugh if I tell you.”“It depends on how lame it would be.”“Juliet.”“Juliet? Where’d they get that?”I sighed. “I once participated in a school play and I starred as Juliet. So people…well, they used that ever since.”He started singing their song.“CUT IT OUT!”He laughed. “But did some boys there asked you out?”“Some did. But only very few were worthy.”He scoffed.I punched his arm. “Because it’s true! Tell you what. It’s even so annoying sometimes. It happened to me for how many times. When I walk across the field or along the corridor, some jerks would say ‘Hey Juliet! Let me be your Romeo!’”“And what did you say?”“Do you wanna die?”He broke into a howl of laughter. I couldn’t help it. I myself laughed over my wise verbal comeback. We shushed down our laughter when a group of school girls passed by us and they swooned and giggled when they saw who I was with.He snatched my arm and waved with it.“Hey, what’re you doing?”“Just smile and wave,”I smiled, but it turned out as the lamest smirk in the world. Before they were completely out of sight, I noticed one of them looking at me with a glare. She was playing with a ball. Her friend elbowed her, telling her to follow.“Uhh… that was weird,” I mumbled.“Waeyo?”“Nothing. By the way, Kibum. Can you please buy me some water? This drink doesn’t do it,”“No,” he said flatly.“Pretty pleaseeeeeeee?”“Nooooooooooo.”“What do you want?”“Do it with aegyo,”I grunted. “Oh for crying out loud…” I did his ppuing ppuing just this morning.“Good,” he pinched my cheek, and he stood up get me my water.I evacuated to the swing and sat there as I waited for him. I swung to and fro. It didn’t take long for him to return. I knew it when someone from behind said, “Hey Juliet! Let me be your Romeo!”I spun my head to the direction of the voice. “Do you wanna die, huh, Kibum?”He giggled and tossed me the bottle of water. He plopped himself on the next swing. Before I uncapped it I eyed him. He caught me looking at him, but I put my sight back on the bottle and smiled.“What were you thinking of, that you just laughed at me?”
“Nothing. And I wasn’t laughing.”“The truth.”I snorted. “It’s just weird,”“What’s weird?”“This. Everything. It’s like a minute ago I was sleeping in my room and now here I am…”“…having a date with me?”I shook my head violently. “No!”“What do you call what we’re doing right now, then?”“Well, you know… we bought the materials, bought some things, and tired ourselves.”“Don’t forget about the lunch and coffee together. And this,”“Yeah.”“A date it is, then.”My shoulders slacked. “Okay. Fine. It’s a date,” KEY’S POV <3“HyunMi-ya,”She gulped down her water. “Hmm?”“Have you done anything reckless before?”“Why’d you ask?”I wanted to know more about you, I thought, but didn’t say. She’d be too flattered to answer if I said that. “Just answer me. I’m just curious.” And besides, I wanted to know more about HyunMi, about her past. She lowered her head in thought. “Yes. I have.”“What caused you to do it?”“Umm… Abeoji’s death.”“I’m sorry,”“No, no. well…um, wait, am I going to tell the whole story?”“If that’s what you want,” I said with a comforting smile. She grinned, but it faded as she looked down. “When Abeoji died, my mother fell to pieces. She just shut herself up in her room and drink alcohol. The family business was failing. My unnie, who wasn’t much of a help back then, never talked to her and just minded herself and her studies. And me, the family brat—““—you were a brat?”“Yes, and I think that I still am,”“You don’t seem to be so,”“Really?”I bobbed my head. “Well, yeah. Go on,”She bowed her head again. “I tried talking to umma. Really. I did. But she—she’d just push me away, telling me to leave her alone to die…” her voice trembled at the last sentence. Then finally, she cried. I knelt in front of her. “Hey, don’t cry! I…I’m sorry if I told you to tell the story…”“It was just so painful, you know. seeing your family falling apart before your eyes,” a tear dropped on her lap. She sniffed, and put on a smile despite of the puffy eyes. “Oops. Sorry if I’m crying. I didn’t mean to be a drama queen or anything,”“It’s okay, don’t cry!” I patted her shoulders.“You know what I did when I got fed up?” she spoke again enthusiastically, looking down at me.“Okay… what did you do?”“I…” she smiled, proud at one moment, then ashamed at the next. “I got drunk. So drunk I was alcohol poisoned.”“Alcohol poisoned?” I gasped. She nodded her head, proud of her ill achievement. “Yup. I was rushed to the hospital by my friends who were with me. To cut the long story short, my mom and sister hurriedly went to the hospital when they heard of it. they thought I was going to die.” I chuckled. “They were so sorry they promised to be good,”“So you…”“Patched the family back together. I’m so awesome, am I not?”“Awesome your face,” I snickered. “Just promise me one thing.”“What is it?”“Just don’t do it again.”“Getting drunk?”“That. And a hundred other reckless things.”“Whoa. I guess I will. I drink, Kibum. But not as bad as you think,”“Just don’t get alcohol poisoned.”“Deal.” HYUNMI!Just as we were done having a discussion about my history, my phone rang. Yu Na was calling, telling me to come and fetch her at some store not so far away from where we were. I told Kibum I’ll get her, but he insisted that he come too, but I didn’t let him. I promised him I’ll be back in a jiffy. It wasn’t really far from the playground where I saw again the school-girls that passed by us. The one who glared at me saw me, but I just smiled politely and did a little bow. She was still playing with the ball, and when it escaped from her grasp she chased it. Yu Na waved when I saw her. I helped her in carrying her bags. Our walk back to the playground was a little slow, because our feet were aching. “Are you sure he’s here?” Yu Na asked as we arrived at the playground.“Yep. Come on, let’s surprise him.” I chuckled as we ducked behind a bush. But I must say, I was the one that got surprised. ---------------------------make up your damn mind HyunMi. ><DID SOMEBODY NOTCE THE DATE ?
