Drunkards (1/1)
Drunkards Heat enveloped the young boy lying on the soft and comfortable mattress as sleep already took over him many hours ago. His constant breathing signified that he was peacefully sleeping, covered in his blue bed sheet. The sunshine pierced through the thin curtains of the room, lightening the place with a soft morning light. Donghae’s beauty sleep suddenly came to an end because of a ringtone coming from his bedside table, announcing him that a certain someone tried to contact him. Trying his best to ignore the irritant sound, he turned around facing the other side of the room. The brown-haired teenager sighed when the sound finally stopped, gladly returning in a deep sleep. Unfortunately for him, the mysterious person was persistent in making him respond the call, causing it to ring once again. Sighing loudly, Donghae opened his eyes while rising from his lying position and yawned soundlessly. He stretched his left arm toward the bedside table and grabbed his still ringing cellphone in his hand. The teenager flipped it open and answered with a hoarse, still sleepy voice.“Hmm… Hello?”“Hey lazy bum, wake up!” Sungmin’s cheerful voice beamed from the cellphone.“Let me sleep Minnie… I’m tired.” He rubbed his eyes with his free hand, removing all hint of tiredness left in his brown orbs.“No way! It's already 11h30AM, get up!”
“Sungmin, I—” “I’m sure you did nothing but sleep yesterday…”
“…Alright, alright. Just...give me some time.” He sighed and ended the conversation without waiting for Sungmin's reply. Friday, Donghae made himself a promise that he was going to spend all Saturday with Sungmin, but unfortunately for him, the latter wasn’t there when he tried to contact him, so he just gave up and stayed in his room, reading random books. However, today was the last day to enjoy the short weekend and the older boy made sure that Donghae would hang out with him.
The student put his phone back where it was and rose from the bed, passing a hand in his brown and messy hair. He took out a pair of gray jeans and a white t-shirt from his drawer and changed right here. He didn't mind changing in front of Jungsu, except that he cared less to walk only in his boxer when he was alone. At least, he was sure that nobody was going to break into the room since he was the only one with the key card. The teenager walked in the bathroom to do his morning routine and got out a little while after, the hairbrush in his hands. Still brushing his hair, the boy glanced at the alarm clock which showed 11h45. Well, he still had enough time to hang out with his friend, but he didn’t want to waste any more minutes, so he quickly put the brush down and took his wallet before walking out the room. Donghae moved toward the staircase at the end of the corridor, near the small kitchen, and went down on the second floor of the building. Sungmin’s room was at the complete end of this floor, it was the last one. Finally in front of the door ‘208’, the boy knocked slightly and waited for his friend to open. It did some seconds after, revealing a boy about his height with black hair and slightly bored eyes. He briefly looked at Donghae and returned his gaze in the other’s orbs. “You’re here for Sungmin?” Donghae simply nodded and the other boy let him pass, opening the door wider. Once in the room, the raven-haired boy turned completely in Donghae’s direction to greet him properly, with a dazzling smile. The two boys never really talked to each other, even if the older one was here often in the weekend when Sungmin wasn’t at his home. To him, he was only ‘Sungmin’s roommate’. “Kibum, who’s this?” Sungmin’s voice was heard as he got out from the closet, apparently searching for something. “Oh, Donghae! I’m almost ready.” Donghae waited while the elder took a thin jacket and came beside him. Sungmin waved vigorously at his roommate telling him he won’t be back until this evening. Both of them walked outside of the room and in the corridor, making their way toward the stairs to the lobby. Once they were there, they waved at the lady and exited the dormitory. “Where are you planning to go exactly?” Donghae said to start a conversation on their way to an unknown destination. “I don’t know, but we’ll stop at a café, I’m a bit hungry.” “That sounds great.”
After a fifteen minutes’ walk, both of them finally made their way to the café Sungmin was talking about while they were walking. A big blue ‘Händel & Gretel’ banner hanged in front of the café. The second they stepped inside, the students were welcomed by the delightful coffee scent and warm ambience of the place, an old lady smiled kindly at them as a greeting form. Donghae and Sungmin sat at a table near the huge windows, waiting for someone to come. Walking toward them was a boy about two years older than them, wearing an apron and holding what seems like a scratch pad and a pen. His chocolate brown hair bounced a little each time he stepped on the ground making Donghae laugh a little. Arriving beside the table, he took a silent breath before speaking a sentence he was probably used to say every time a new customer sat there. However, his expression suddenly changed in a surprised one when he looked at the boy in front of Donghae. “Sungmin! What are you doing here?” “Just grabbing something to eat, isn’t it obvious? And you?” The older boy said playfully, looking at the waiter. “Working. What a useless question, Min.” He laughed and took a slight look at the one accompanying his friend. “Anyway, what will you guys order?” “A chicken teriyaki sandwich with a caramel macciato. And you Hae?” “Hmm, chocolate muffin and raspberry mocha.” “Okay, just a second.” He turned his back to them and headed back behind the counter. The seventeen years old boy looked at Sungmin, who was still glancing at the elder’s gone form with a smile slightly plastered on his features. “I’m sure I saw him somewhere before…” The older turned his head in Donghae’s direction, looking at him like he just grown two head. “Donghae… He’s in our math class.” “Wha-what?! But I never saw him before!” “Maybe because he’s discreet? Or…the fact that you’re always sleeping in class doesn’t help much.” Donghae’s cheeks reddened a little by embarrassment at the statement, much to his sadistic friend’s pleasure. “Hey, it’s not my fault. That’s freaking boring, plus I don’t really need to pay attention since—” He didn’t have time to finish his sentence that the waiter came back, their order in hands. “Here’s your food guys, enjoy.” “Yesung, why don’t you sit with us?” Sungmin talked, showing the empty seat beside Donghae. “Well…” He glanced around the café, noting that there weren’t a lot of customers, so he just had to agree with his friend’s offer. “Why not, just for a few minutes. I still need to work thought.” And minutes quickly became hours as the three of them found many subjects to talk about. The boys easily spent three hours blabbering about themselves, their common hobbies and even about school subject. Donghae then learned a lot of things about his new friend. Like that he worked here as a part-time job on the weekend to gain some money to pay his school fee or even if Jongwoon—better known as Yesung— was nineteen years old, he was in the same level as Sungmin and Donghae in school. Unfortunately for him, the boy used to ditch class way too often last year so the principal made him fail his year. What an asshole. “Oh, I guess we need to go now. It’s getting late.” The blond boy exclaimed, looking at the silver watch hanging around his wrist. “But Min, it’s not that late. It’s only 3h15…” “I know, but I need to go somewhere before returning at the dorm.” “That’s understandable. Come and see me more often!”
“We will. See you!” Both boys waved at him and leaved the café. Sungmin then made his way toward the nearest market, saying that he needed to restock the fridge in the floor kitchen. Donghae took the opportunity to do so. I won’t be forced to leave and buy missing groceries later. After what seemed like an hour and half, the boys went out, hands filled with plastic bags. The day went like this, wandering in the city, window shopping in the street, eating ice cream in a park and when the evening began to show, they went to a fast-food and ate some unhealthy meal. The previously sunny and cloudy sky was now plastered in a dark sheet of black painting, illuminated by some not-so-shining-stars. Some street lamp was on, lightening the road the boys were silently walking on. The cool air stroked Donghae’s face, pushing some of his hair off his closed eyes. He inhaled the fresh air, enjoying the remaining hours of this small school break. The silence sharply ended when Sungmin’s cellphone rang loudly in the empty street. “Yes, Kibum?” “Where are you?” The younger spoke in a soft worried voice. “I’m on my way, don’t need to worry.” The elder laughed a bit. “Hmm. Take care then, see you.” Donghae looked oddly at his friend who was smiling a bit. The blond boy turned his attention on the younger and pointed toward an alley on the left. “We’re gonna take the shortcut!” They both walked in to the dark alley, heading toward the school ground, passing by some clubs on their way. The street was clearly awake; the music played loudly, people were chatting, screaming and singing non-stop. Donghae’s heartbeat quicken when they passed by a group of drunken young people, apart from the others near the bar. They were chatting loudly, like the others, seemingly not aware of their surroundings, until the brown-haired boy passed by them and accidently kicked an empty bottle of beer on the ground, causing it to roll on the cracked cement. They all stopped talking and looked at the teenager, who didn’t stop walking. “Hey, you!” Donghae gulped but didn’t turned around and keep his gaze fixed on the ground continually while walking. “Hey! Turn around you brat!” Sungmin sighed at their behavior, but he was as nervous as his friend. They quickened their steps and distanced themselves from the drunkards. “Come here! You wanna fight?! Hahaha!” Suddenly, one of them picked an unopened beer and threw it toward the students angrily. Fortunately for them, it hit the wall just beside.Once out from that street, they sighed heavily and continued their way more calmly. “They’re crazy…” Donghae muttered under his breath. Sungmin only nodded in response. Relieved to finally be lying in his smooth bed, Donghae closed his eyes to sleep peacefully, in attempt to erase those stressful events that happened half an hour ago. Unluckily, he wasn’t able because of the sudden loud chatting and laughing in the corridor. It seemed like someone was stomping like mad on the floor, or completely falling on the ground before bursting out laughing. The boy sighed, completely annoyed and wished for them to go in their room. Donghae abruptly rose from his bed, determined to make them shut up. He walked near his door, ready to open it, but the sounds suddenly quietened. Before opening the door and taking a look outside, the boy placed his ear on the wooden door, listening quietly. “—and get up dickhead!” “Haha! He’s too drunk he can’t!” Donghae’s eyes widen a little, but he couldn’t stop himself from opening the door just a little bit to see what was going on in the corridor. He then saw a boy with short brown hair lying on the ground, clutching his stomach while laughing for absolutely nothing while another one with red hair was kicking him a bit on the side, apparently angry at him.Kangin and Hyukjae! “We drank as much as him and we’re not falling everywhere!” Hyukjae shouted at the other one with long black hair who was holding the wall for support. Heechul… Strangely, I feel like I’m always spying and catching them red handed. “Sleep well fat ass!” The Heechul guy slapped the drunken boy across the face before beginning to walk away, laughing. “I’m going in your room Hyuk.” “Don’t leave me here alone you jerk! Hahahaha!” Kangin yelled to the feminine man, laughing once again. He tried to get up with the help of the wall beside him and walked with his friend in the red head’s room. Donghae, who was holding his breath, exhaled soundlessly watching them leave. He then turned his attention to the remaining one as he withdrew from his pocket a pack of cigarettes. With his eyes closed, Hyukjae lightened it and put it in his mouth, inhaling and exhaling the smoke slowly, as if it was calming him down. The younger boy gasped, seeing the older smoking in such an inappropriate place. The red-haired teen suddenly opened his eyes and turned his head toward the small opening of the door, seeing Donghae peeking at him. The latter, taken by surprise, quickly closed his door, cursing under his breath. Fuck, fuck, fuck! What if he saw me? Of course he saw me, he was obviously glaring at me! You’re stupid Donghae, stupid! Crap… The teenager rose and ran in his bed, feeling like his heart wanted to jump out of his rib cage. He closed his eyes, wanting to forget it once again, wishing it was only a nightmare. This night, Donghae didn’t find any sleep.
