Kyungsoo and Jongin have always been friends. You know that first best friend you get as a kid, and nothing else matters because you’re best friends and on top of the world? That was Kyungsoo to Jongin and Jongin to Kyungsoo. When in kindergarten, the kid with the jet black hair and big eyes, and the kid with the bronzed skin and plump lips end up together on the swings on the play set, and from then on, always share their crayons and partner up during silent reading. And for snack time, even though Kyungsoo wants his last animal cracker he gives it to Jongin, because the pout on his face makes his tummy flutter and it gets him title of “the bestest friend in the world.” Or when Jongin is there to wipe Kyungsoo’s tears away when he’s pushed down by the big meanie Chanyeol.. and later decides to hide his snacks as revenge. Jongin would always grab Kyungsoo’s hand, “to protect him” he said, causing a quite red Kyungsoo and a punch to the stomach. And since they’re little, and still way too innocent for the evil world that they live in, nothing mattered besides the amount of time they got to take a nap, and whether or not they could sneak a second juice box into their lunches (or steal some from Derpyeol). Those times in middle school where no matter how hard you try or think you’re doing well, things are awkward as hell and you feel like your life sucks. Well at least it was that way for Kyungsoo. He was still really short while all the guys around him started to grow taller and taller each day. He was the nerdy kid who went to honors math and played in the band. All the teachers loved him, and he was pegged as the “teachers pet”, even though he thought that was a good thing. But all the while, Jongin went to his practices, whether it would be for basketball or soccer, or any other sport Kyungsoo wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole. He liked to make others laugh, even in the middle of class, and would get in trouble every so often. But Kyungsoo knew he didn’t have to worry about losing his best friend, because they would always make sure to have lunch together, consisting of Jongin still using his pout to get Kyungsoo’s last chicken nugget or to eat all his fries. When after school, they would walk together and Jongin would make up some excuse to stay at Kyungsoo's. Kyungsoo would help Jongin with his homework while Jongin, without fail, would lose his concentration every other second. He would bring up a new girl who watched him at practice that day, and Kyungsoo would shut him up with a pencil to his head and turn into an unreasonable grouch. And the only way Jongin could bring him back from the land of the angry, is to ask a question on why "x" wasnt just a letter cruel people threw in to make math the equivalent to a fiery hell. Then, on the weekends, Kyungsoo would go over to Jongin’s, where Jongin would beat Kyungsoo in Mortal Kombat at least ten times before Kyungsoo would claim that video games actually killed brain cells and made them go to sleep. Yeah they were always good.Kyungsoo learned that sometimes being a kid can have you make foolish assumptions. First of all, High school was not anything to look forward to. He hated it. Kyungsoo realized that his height wasn’t just slowed by his amount of coffee intake.. no he was just short as hell. His voice was about a few octaves lower than most guys, but that didn’t make him as much a man in their eyes. Still being involved in choir and band apparently didn’t help. Jongin grew about 2 feet in 2 seconds, and his jaw angled into perfection. His athletics continued, toning his body and making him the star athlete on any sport he chose to give a try. In other words, Kyungsoo was still the nerdy kid while Jongin was popular. Kyungsoo and Jongin, were still the same though, making their friendship work through the opposite lives they had. Well, same is a debatable word where their relationship is invovled. Jongin’s shameless hands on Kyungsoo's knee at lunch or around his shoulder on the walks home were not the same. And when Kyungsoo would respond with his own hand on top of Jongin's, and quick pecks to the cheeks before he ran into the house.. yeah things were different.Kyungsoo and Jongin were never ones to act on the differentness though. They were just best friends. When summer rolled around, of course they spent all their time together. It had been Kyungsoos last year and they both acted like that didn’t mean Kyungsoo would be leaving off to college. Their Mortal Kombat nights continued, as well as the shameless touching. But it was only platonic of course, the thoughts revolving in their head before they drifted off to dreamland consisting of “even mom’s hold their children’s hands and give them kisses on the cheek”. As the weeks went on, Kyungsoo got busier and busier. They still never talked about it, and ignored the cardboard boxes full of Kyungsoo’s possessions, acting like they weren’t there. When the weeks turned into days it couldn’t be put off any longer. These days are the days Jongin finally works up his nerves and pulls Kyungsoo closer to him. The days that he links their hands and Kyungsoo presses soft kisses to Jongin's plump limps. Those nights being the nights that clothes end up scattered around the room, along with their thoughts and feelings., words of hushed promised and not-goodbyes lost in the cool dark night.Maybe Kyungsoo and Jongin have always been more than friends.
