“Because Yungmin closed down the club so now you have nothing better to do than go to the party,” Kai chirped, glancing at her briefly before turning his attention back to the road. “That and you’re a sucker for a nice car.” Well he had her there.
“And before you say anything else, Miss Chatty,” Kai said, making fun of her short, clipped speech. “I know you have a change of clothes in that bag. Yungmin always makes the staff dress in partywear on the weekends. You got off easy yesterday because you got hired on the spot, but he told you to come prepared today.” Jakyung didn’t have an argument for this either and kept her mouth shut.
“It’ll be fun, I promise,” Kai said after a moment of silence. Jakyung gave a short snort and rolled her eyes.
“Not like I have a choice now anyways.” The bitterness in her voice was almost enough to make Kai pull a U-Turn and take her to the nearest bus stop to go home. It was the look in her eyes that stopped him though.
Through the reflection, he could see that she was thinking hard about something. And whatever she was thinking about troubled her enough to make her words come out like acid. Different than the bored tone she had yesterday. Different even than when she hissed at Suho to never touch her again. If she had something that difficult bothering her, surely a party would take her mind off things.
The rest of the ride was silent. Jakyung played with her phone and Kai occasionally glanced at her from the corner of his eyes. By the time they pulled into the garage, Kai was ready to blurt out some nonsense words just to break up the silence. She didn’t even react when they had pulled up to the gates of the two-story mansion and its sprawling acreage.
“Nice set of cars you have,” she said as she slid out of Kai’s Hellcat. She ran a finger over the front hood of a cherry-red Maserati convertible. “Are these all yours?”
“Would you think I was cool if I said yes?” he laughed, and he saw the ghost of a smile quirk her lips upward. He led her to the entrance that would bring them on to the main floor, and paused. “You might want to brace yourself.” Jakyung wanted to ask for what, but he didn’t give her time to respond and just opened the door.
She was hit in the face by a wall of sound that rattled to her core. It was like she was standing in a giant subwoofer, the music was so loud. Her eyebrows shot up in surprise at the number of people already jammed onto the dance floor Kai led her through. She didn’t mind that he had grabbed her hand, as she was sure she would have gotten lost in the thick of the crowd if he wasn’t pulling her along. He took her up a set of stairs that led to a hallway with doors neatly lined on either side. He opened one, gagged and closed it immediately, taking a moment to shudder before trying the next.
“You can change in here,” he said after trying the third door. “Just come find me downstairs when you’re done changing.” She had no idea why she was listening to a guy whose name she had only learned on the car ride over here, but she was here now and unless she wanted to hotwire a car or walk back into the city, she had no other option but to change.
As soon as he closed the door, Jakyung took a moment to survey her surroundings. The bedroom she was in was very neat, furnished in varying shades of blues and blacks. The curtains were even black, with
