Orange Chicken (1/1)

Ever since he was young, Jongwoon, or rather Yesung, always enjoyed orange chicken. It was one of a few Chinese dishes he’d tried and enjoyed. The only reason he’d even tried any Chinese dishes at all was because his best friend was half Chinese. His best friend, Kyuhyun, and him were practically inseparable since they met in the first grade. Their parents even joked that they were attached at the hip. He’d been over for dinner countless times since then. Usually, they just threw in a pizza in the oven and played video games, but when Kyuhyun’s dad was home and in a good mood, he’d cook for them. Hangeng, Kyuhyun’s dad, loved to cook some of his home country’s dishes for them. However, some days when he gets home, he just wants to curl up in bed with his cat-like wife. Yesung adored his orange chicken, so whenever he had the ingredients, he’d make it for the boy. Now in high school, the visits increased and their parents treated the other son as if he were their own. “Kyuhyun, what is your schedule? What is your schedule?” Yesung asked running up to his friend the first day of their second year of high school. “I have history first hour, then Choir second hour, Math third hour, lunch, then Science, English, Dance and finally Korean. What about you?” Kyuhyun asked. “Mine’s practically the same as yours, except third hour I have Cooking instead of Math and have Math 7th hour. I still can’t believe they put me in Cooking over Dance!” Yesung complained. “No offense, but your dancing pales in comparison to everyone else,” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes. Yesung felt hurt but brushed it off as his friend just being snarky, like normal. The two went to enter the high school, but where stopped by the shout of a little boy. “Hyung!” Kyuhyun and Yesung both turned around at the shout. A little boy, no older than 5, launched himself onto Kyuhyun. “Don’t make me go!” Kyuhyun picked the boy up, his eyes immediately softening. “Taemin, the first grade is not scary. Trust me. Why would your hyung lie to you?” he told the boy. His Umma ran up moments later and he didn’t look happy. “Taemin, we’re going to be late,” his Umma, Heechul, complained. Taemin just buried his face further into Kyuhyun’s school uniform. By now, a few of the girls had come over to ogle over Taemin’s adorable childish behavior. “Trust me, Taeminnie, you’ll make a whole bunch of friends. How do you think I met your Yesung-hyung?” Kyuhyun once again comforted his scared baby brother. Taemin sniffed cutely. “You met Yesung-hyung in first grade?” he asked with wide innocent eyes. Kyuhyun nodded. “Will I meet someone like Yesung-hyung in first grade?” “You won’t know if you don’t go,” Kyuhyun replied. “Then I’ll go hyung!” he said confidently. Kyuhyun chuckled slightly and kissed his brother’s forehead, before handing him over to his mother. “Bye bye Kyuhyun-hyung!” he waved over his mother’s shoulder. The two turned back and entered the school. “You’ve never shown your soft side at school, Kyuhyun!” Yesung teased poking his stomach before touching his philtrum. Kyuhyun pushed him away from him, a frown forming on his face. “But, I saw Sungmin-hyung watching. He looked pretty happy to see that soft side of you.” Sungmin was a senior and a year older than them, and to say Kyuhyun was crushing hard him was an understatement. Kyuhyun had liked him since the start of high school last year when they met the pretty senior in their choir and dance class. He also happened to be in Kyuhyun’s math class, since Kyuhyun took the advanced math class. “Shut up, Yesung,” Kyuhyun turned his head away from him to hide the smile that was forming on his face. Thankfully, he was saved by the bell, so Yesung dropped the subject as they went off to their history class. The class passed pretty quickly, probably because it was only the first day. They only did some get-to-know-you activities that involved the history of Korea. Yesung didn’t really care for the games. After this year, none of these people would care about him again, so why really pay attention today. Choir came along next, much to both of their relief. The majority of the class was in the choir last year, but there were a few new faces. One guy, put in the tenor section, caught Yesung’s eye, but he brushed it off thinking it was just because he had a good voice, like when he heard Sungmin sing for the first time. “So, if anyone is confident, you can come up and perform for your peers today,” their choir director, Jaejoong told them. “You’re only saying that because you don’t have our music yet!” Sungmin called to him in a teasing manner. “That too, but I want to hear my son sing today,” Jaejoong-seonsangnim answered with a happy smile on his face. The kid that caught Yesung’s attention earlier covered his face by burying it in Sungmin’s shoulder. “Umma!” he complained. Jaejoong just smirked. “C’mon Wookie, you can do a duet with Minnie if you want,” he answered. Sungmin and Ryeowook’s faces instantly went red at the nicknames their teacher had given them, but reluctantly, they got up. Yesung found his heart fluttering and his mind numbing while the two sang. Kyuhyun, who was next to him, didn’t look like he was handling himself much better. When the song ended, everyone was amazed by the duo and started cheering, including Jaejoong-seonsangnim. “Now, you all know I don’t play favorites, so even my precious Ryeowook will have to earn the solos you’ll have this year,” their director encouraged them. “So, who’s next? How about Baozi?” Oh, Jaejoong-seonsangnim seemed to be having too much fun. One of Sungmin’s friends groaned and got up from his chair, dragging the guy from the tenor section down with him. Yesung recognized them from the dance class he took last year. Baozi, or Xiumin, had an amazing bass voice, and he pulled Luhan, a very sweet voiced tenor down to do a duet with him. Both of them were seniors as well. Seeing Sungmin’s proud smile on his face as he watched his friends sing, Kyuhyun couldn’t help but get jealous. When the performance ended, he stood to volunteer.  Jaejoong, wanting to hear a girl’s voice, picked Krystal and Amber to go next, so he would go next. Krystal was a soprano while Amber was an alto. Finally, Kyuhyun got to sing. He pulled Yesung up with him, which didn’t surprise anyone. What did surprise them was that he actually volunteered to go. Kyuhyun didn’t like to show off, and Yesung was too shy to volunteer. Usually, Jaejoong-seonsangnim had to volunteer them. Kyuhyun whispered in Yesung’s ear what song they should do. Yesung got on the piano for the song the two had written over the summer. They had performed it only before their parents, so the nerves were tremendous. The song was Your Eyes. Yesung wrote the melody while Kyuhyun wrote the back beat as well as the lyrics. Kyuhyun’s voice glided into the song. His eyes somehow made their way to Sungmin’s throughout the song. Yesung and Kyuhyun’s voices blended so well together, it blew everyone away, but most importantly Sungmin. The bell rang shortly after the performance ended and they quickly left the classroom, not wanting to meet the criticism they expected but wouldn’t get. They split up, Yesung going to the cooking class while Kyuhyun went towards his math class. Unfortunately for Kyuhyun, Sungmin caught him off when he got into the math classroom. “Sungmin, I can explain! It was just that-” Before he could continue speaking, Sungmin cut him off by connecting their lips together. Kyuhyun’s eyes widened, but needless returned the kiss. “I loved the song, Kyu, and I love your caring side towards your brother. I love you Kyuhyun,” the senior whispered, their lips were still inches apart. This time Kyuhyun initiated the kiss. “I lo-love you too Sungmin,” Kyuhyun answered. A few of the girls awed at the sight, forcing them back into reality. “The song was made for you, you know.” Sungmin smiled and dragged him to a random pair of desks before the teacher could come in. ~*~ Yesung found himself hating and loving cooking class. He hated it because sometime that week, they had to bring in something they made themselves. He loved it because Ryeowook was in the class with him. Thankfully, the only thing the class did was some getting-to-know-the-equipment activities. He was so glad when lunch came along. Unlike his friend Kyuhyun, who preferred to bring his lunch every day (Yesung suspected it was because his father was such a great cook), he liked to buy his lunch. Let’s just say, his family tended to eat out or heat something up.  After getting his lunch, he surveyed the cafeteria for Kyuhyun. He was surprised to see Kyuhyun waving him over… from Sungmin’s table. ‘Did something happen between those two?’ he thought to himself as he made his way over. “Hey Kyu!” he greeted taking the empty seat between him and Sungmin’s friend Luhan. ~*~ The remainder of the school day passed by relatively quickly. Yesung’s day ended well. He already got math homework, but really he couldn’t complain. Kyuhyun on the other hand, had kind of hoped Yesung been in the dance class again. He had entirely forgot that the dance teacher, Shindong-seonsangnim, was Sungmin’s father. Kyuhyun had been lectured the first ten minutes of class on how to treat Sungmin and what not to do on a date, in front of the entire class. Sungmin could only watch helplessly off to the side with Luhan and Xiumin while his dad practically scared Kyuhyun away. Hell, Kyuhyun literally thought of running away, but Sungmin was definitely worth it. After school, Kyuhyun hugged Sungmin goodbye (Shindong was watching) and told him he’d see him tomorrow, before meeting up with Yesung to go to his house. “So, did Shindong-seonsangnim give you the boyfriend talk?” Yesung teased when they reached his house. Kyuhyun groaned. “Yes! I entirely forgot his father was our dance teacher,” Kyuhyun grumbled. He flopped down on Yesung’s bed, content to stay there for a good 10 minutes to allow the day to sink in. “Remind me never to hurt Sungmin, ever. I’m sure I won’t be living the day after.” Yesung laughed. “I’m sure you won’t. Besides, his dad is the least of your worries. Remember, he knows Kung Fu, or whatever it’s called. He could kick sorry ass out of the country,” he reminded him. “Well, did anyone catch your eye this year?” Kyuhyun, wisely, chose to change the subject, and push it away from himself. “Yah! Stop making it sound like I’m some player!” Yesung whacked him. Kyuhyun smirked. “So, someone did!” he smirked only seemed to get eviler. “Was it that girl in our Science class? No, I bet it was that girl in our History class. She really seemed to like you!” Kyuhyun continued to ramble off random girls and random names from their classes. “Unless, it could be someone from your cooking class!” Instantly, Yesung’s face flushed red, as his mind pictured Ryeowook leaning over the sink washing his hands. He willed the blush away but not before being met with a victorious grin from his friend. “Do you know how much of a girl you sounded? I swear you’re worse than Jessica when she finds out there is a new sale on shoes.” “So, she is from your cooking class?” Kyuhyun smiled. “Tell me, tell me, tell me!” “It’s nobody, really. It’s just your evil mind playing tricks on you,” Yesung denied it, turning his head away to hide the blush. “Jongwoon, I’ve known you for more than 10 years; you can’t lie to me,” Kyuhyun reminded him. Yesung groaned. “So, who is she? Or is it a he?” “It’s Ryeowook, okay!” Yesung finally snapped at him. Kyuhyun whistled at the outburst. “Besides, I only met him today. He could be a real jerk, like his umma, for all I know.” “Denial~” Kyuhyun sang. He got up off the bed and set up the game system. Kyuhyun was not going to let this go. ~*~ For the next month of school, Yesung tried to ignore Kyuhyun’s constant teasing, but it was getting increasingly harder to do so as the days went by. Sungmin had found out a few days later, and tried to sway Yesung into saying something to him, reassuring him that Ryeowook took more after his father in personality than his umma. Still, Yesung refused to admit that he had started to like the 1st year. Well that is until they started making foreign foods in cooking class. They had started off with stuff relatively easy such as Ddeokbokki and how to properly cook Kimchi without burning it. (Yesung found it fascinating that he didn’t burn it the first time. Apparently, he didn’t inherit his parents’ cooking skills.) They began making orange chicken at the start of the second quarter. When he tasted his own, it wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the same as when Kyuhyun’s dad made it. He wondered what it was that made the orange chicken he loved so much like that. “Holy Shin Ki!” their teacher, Changmin-seonsangnim yelled in amazement. “Ryeowook, this is the best orange chicken I have ever tasted. Do you mind letting the class taste it?” He saw the younger boy nod shyly before going around to each station for everyone to taste it. When he got to Yesung, he nervously looked down and asked in a small voice, “Would you like to try it Jongwoon-ssi?” Yesung could only nod as he took his chopsticks to try it. The second it touched his tongue, he felt like the world had stopped. The orange chicken was better than Kyuhyun’s dad’s. His eyes closed in pleasure from the taste of it. “It’s really good Ryeowook, and please, call me Yesung,” he managed to say without embarrassing himself. Ryeowook’s face lit up in a smile, making Yesung’s heart flutter. “I’m glad you like it Yesung-ssi!” The boy then moved back to his station, where Changmin finished the plate of orange chicken. It was official… Yesung was in had fallen in love with Ryeowook…hard. ~*~ “Are you okay, Yesung?” Hangeng asked. Kyuhyun’s family, which included Sungmin and Yesung, were gathered around the dinner table eating. They were having orange chicken and usually Yesung was very animated during dinner, and would’ve already been finished with his plate. “He’s a bit love-struck with a certain tenor,” Kyuhyun filled his parents in. Heechul’s eyes instantly went to Sungmin. “Not Sungmin, umma! He’s mine. But, he is a friend of Sungmin’s.” Hangeng laughed at his son’s possessiveness. “Is Yesung-hyung twitter pated?” Taemin asked innocently. Sungmin awed at his cuteness. “Okay, who let him watch Bambi?” Heechul asked. “He quotes that more than Lion King, and I refuse to accept that!” Sungmin giggled. “I’m sorry Heechul-umma! Kyuhyun brought him over to Ryeowook’s house yesterday, since we had to rehearse, and Wookie’s dad is a huge fan of it,” Sungmin apologized. “Ryeowook’s umma is our Choir director, so we went over to ask for help.” Sungmin added after meeting Heechul’s glare. “I had so much fun umma! Yunho-appa was fun to hang out with!” Taemin bounced energetically. “Okay okay! Back on topic please! Yesung who is the lucky guy!” Heechul asked. “…Ryeowook…” he muttered with his face down. “Well, confess boy!” Heechul shouted at him, throwing his chopsticks at his head. His demeanor took an immediate 360. “But no pressure.” “Yeah, no pressure…” ~*~ Yesung had everything planned out. He even had made sure to receive permission from Ryeowook’s parents, partly because he was slightly afraid of Jaejoong-seonsangnim. Now, the only thing left to do was get him here. He had set up a picnic in the park, with a great amount of help from Sungmin and Hangeng. Jaejoong told him several of his son’s favorite foods that Yesung packed in the picnic basket. He also planned to sing the song he wrote especially for Ryeowook, the song It Has To Be You. “C’mon Wookie, it’s just a little bit farther. Once you hear the music, you can take the blindfold off,” Yesung heard Sungmin say. “But hyung, it’ll probably rain soon,” Ryeowook complained. Rain? Yesung looked up to the sky. Sure enough, dark angry-looking clouds were forming above. Still, Sungmin urged him on, so he began to sing. Ryeowook, hearing the voice that filled his dreams and made him not want to get up instantly made him take off the blindfold. Standing before him and singing his heart out with his eyes closed was the man from his dreams, Jongwoon… Yesung. He opened his eyes when the song came to an end. “Ryeowook, I was wondering-” Before he could finish his sentence, it started to pour. Yesung secretly thought that the sky was against him or something. He quickly grabbed Ryeowook’s hand, abandoning the picnic basket, and covering their heads with his jacket while they ran for cover from the rain. They managed to hide out in the closest building, which just so happened to be a burger shack. Yesung sighed when they took a seat at a random table in the fast food joint. “Yesung-ssi? Can I ask what you were going to tell me?” Ryeowook asked shyly. Yesung suddenly grew very nervous. “It’s just uh… well um… Will you go out with me?” he asked quickly. Ryeowook was shocked speechless. Was Yesung asking him out? Him of all people? He could die right here and he wouldn’t care. His dreams were coming true! Oh, he could just faint! Receiving no reply, Yesung took it as a rejection. Of course, Ryeowook wouldn’t want to date him. He was just some nobody with only his voice to brag about. He didn’t get the best grades, he occasionally got in trouble for dozing in class, and he wasn’t the most athletic kid out there. What was the use? Having regained his senses, Ryeowook saw Yesung’s forlorn expression. “Of course I’ll go out with you! I’m sorry I didn’t answer sooner. The question just caught me off guard id all,” Ryeowook finally answered. Yesung’s face instantly lit up. “Really?” Yesung asked in surprise. Ryeowook smiled in return. Yesung all about cheered and jumped out of his chair. “Thank you!” “You have no idea how much I wanted you to ask,” Ryeowook admitted shyly. Yesung could only smile. Then he realized the picnic basket and his growling stomach. “Would you like something to eat?” Yesung asked. “Originally, I had a picnic planned, but I entirely forgot about it and left it in the rain. Jaejoong-seonsangnim even told me a few of your favorites for me to prepare,” Yesung admitted sadly. “Well, I’ll always remember this day. There’s nothing like a first date like camping out and eating burgers in a burger shack waiting for the rain to stop,” Ryeowook said positively. “I’m really sorry,” Yesung replied. “Stop apologizing. I’m actually having a good time. I’d rather eat in a comfortable burger joint with you than having an awkward picnic with stuff I eat often. Besides, I find it fun when stuff gets ruined for the better,” Ryeowook told him. “And to me, it’s the thought that counts.” “I guess the only thing I have to worry about is your umma on Monday, because I got his picnic basket wet,” Yesung laughed. “Yeah, he might kill you for that,” Ryeowook giggled. “Great…”Happy Birthday Ryeowook! (It's the 21st there, so )

Anyway, I spent the majority of this week doing this, (when I should've been cleaning) so I hope you enjoy it.

It was originally just going to be YeWook, but while I was writing it, I had a fabulous idea, so I added in KyuMin.

(I meant to imply YunJae and HanChul, my sister thought I was implying HanMin, whatever it's called for Xiumin and Luhan, but I just like their voices, so I don't want to be killed by any HunHan shippers. *hides*)

It ended up longer than I expected, but I'm not complaining. I loved writing it. I actually finished it last night while watching the Super Show 2.

Anyway, bye bye!
