Prologue (1/1)
"Yah! Don't read when you're walking!" as she said that, Jiyeon snatched the book from her daughter. "Kina-ya, you should be careful."The little girl, Kina, looked up at her mother. "Joseongeyo, umma. But I have a big Math test today, and you do know how much I hate it, right?" she took the book back from her mother and opened a page about algebras. "I need to study hard so I can get good grades.""But your Math scores have always been good.""That's because I study hard every time I have a test.""Well, then. I think you're studying too hard," Jiyeon closed the book in her daughter's hands. "You're a smart girl, Kina. Plus, you shouldn't force yourself."Kina nodded and walked beside her mother. It was a cold morning in the busy streets of Seoul, and they were walking to the underground station to take the subway to school."Hey, Kina. What do you want to be when you grow up?" asked Jiyeon.Kina shrugged. "I don't know. But I don't want anything, that's got to do with Math," she said. "Should I be a celebrity? That doesn't concern Math, right, umma?"Jiyeon chuckled, before sighing and looked up to the sky. "Numbers, numbers. That's all that matters in this world right now. Thinking about it, I might start to hate Math too," she said. "Sometimes I think, being the first, the second, or the last.. having a perfect score or having a big zero on your test.. making big money by having a great position on your company, or only a little money because you aren't an important role? I don't think that defines who you are. Numbers, well, they're something, but it seems that everything in life is defined by numbers now."Kina only stayed silent listening to her mother, she started thinking."It's true that everything in life uses Math, but.. don't let numbers define you, okay, Kina? I don't really care if you got a big zero on your test, I'll always be proud because I know you studied hard on it.""Okay, umma..""Not just tests. There are still a lot of things you need to learn in life. And I don't guarantee that I could always be there for you," she continued. "But I think my big girl can overcome all of her problems, right? You're beautiful, and you're witty, brave and stunning.. you're different, that's what I know. Not to mention so annoying, talks a lot, lazy...""Umma!" Kina chuckled, softly hitting her mother."Hey! I'm speaking honestly here!"They laughed along the road, until they stopped, waiting to cross the road."Umma..""Hm?""I love you."Her mother smiled. As the lights turn green, signaling that it was safe to cross the road, Jiyeon quickly grabbed her daughter's hand and led her to cross the road. But just then, a speeding motorcycle was running towards the crowd of people crossing the road. The motorcycle was lurching along the road uncontrollably. People were yelling, telling them to quickly get off the road. Kina was suddenly pushed of the roads, following a screech and a loud bang. As she turned around for her mother, her whole body suddenly froze. There she was, lying in the middle of the road, covered with fresh, crimson blood. She felt her whole world tumbling down in an instant."UMMA!!" she screamed, as she ran through the crowds and to her mother. Kina held her mother in her lap, shaking her with her bloody hands. "Umma! Umma, wake up! Umma.." she called as tears started running down her cheeks."Kina-ya.." Kina could hear her mother's whimpers, calling her name."Umma.."Jiyeon's bloody hand reached out for her daughter's face, caressing it softly. "I.. love you.. too.." she said with a faint, painful smile.Kina's sobs became louder, and she hugged her mother tighter. "Umma, please don't.."But there was no use. Jiyeon's smile faded, and her body stopped quivering. There were no hitch of breaths, no trembling hands, nothing. Kina started crying again, and buried her face in her mother's chest. People only stared down at the two, witnessing what's probably the most heartbreaking sight, and the worst loss for a little girl.Kina opened her eyes. On a gravestone sitting in front of her was carved the name Baek Jiyeon, and sequences of numbers; dates. Date of birth, and date of death. 22.03.2011 was carved besides the second category. It was two days ago, and at that time, that gravestone doesn't exist. She could feel a teardrop rolling down her cheek, before she took a breath in. As her arm held out to put a bouquet of flowers in front of her mother's gravestone, his father's grabbed her shoulders."Come on, Kina. Let's go home," he said, weak but firm at the same time.Kina took a big breath again, trying to hold in the tears that's been waiting to pour out. He turned to her father and grabbed his hand, before walking away, not daring to look back.© hellopsr stories, 2012 Annyeong~ I'm back!YES. I have been a very bad author. Come at me, bricks!
