Promise (1/1)
Lay watched Haerin sleep with the same curiosity as every night. He was always amazed at how her lips gaped open slightly, her breathes even. How she curled to one side of the bed, hugging her pillow. How her hair trailed behind her in a fine weave of creamy brown. Haerin let out a small sigh, and turned, flinging her arm over to the other side. A speck of silver catches Lay's attention. He moves mutely across the moonlight floor, and reaches out to touch the single band encircling her ring finger. A sharp pang of guilt and regret washes over Lay. It was the promise ring he had given her. "Come on!" Shouted Haerin from the couch in her living room. She had inserted a movie, and had paused it to wait for Lay."Coming!" Came Lay's muffled voice from the kitchen. He placed a shaking head to his chest, where his heart hammered vigourously against his rib cage. He dropped the little box into his pocket, and grabbed the popcorn. Lay sat down on the couch nervously, and Haerin automatically laid her head on his shoulder, and pressed 'play'. Munching on the popcorn obliviously, Haerin chortled at the scenes on screen. Noticing that she was the only one laughing, she looked up, and blinked up at Lay. His jaw was taut, fist clenched over his jean pocket. His eyes were focused on the screen, but she could tell he wasn't watching the movie. Haerin jabbed a finger into his side. "ACK!" Lay yelped, eyes darting over to Haerin. She expected him to laugh, to attack her back, but instead, Lay cleared his throat, and rubbed the back of his neck nervously. Haerin narrowed her eyes."What's going on?" She questioned, hands on her hips. Lay's eyes flew everywhere except on her. "Are you sick?" She asked, concern now in her voice. Lay shook his head, but remained tense. Haerin racked her brains, and suddenly her eyes dimmed and she let out a pained breath."Are you..done with me?" She barely makes a sound. Lay's eyes widened as saucers."No! Of course not! How could you even.." Lay sputtered, disbelief in his voice. He sighed, then reached for her hands."I want you to listen to me. Whatever I say, don't interrupt until I'm finished." He said all at once. Haerin nodded silently. Lay took a long, withering breath."Haerin..you know I love you. I love you so much that everytime I picture myself without you, it's a blank slate in my mind. You've become my life. I wake up every morning, knowing that I can see your face, and I never want to stop feeling that joyous rush when I know you're mine. That you love me too. So..be mine forever, Haerin. I promise you I'll make you happy. I'll do everything I possibly can each and every day. Haerin...will you grant my wish, and marry me?" Lay turned away slightly in embarrassment, before taking the box from his pocket. He pulled the lid, and heard Haerin's loud gasp."Lay..oh..oh my god." Was all she said. Her eyes glittered with tears as she flung herself into his arms."YES!" She squealed into his chest, and Lay's arms snaked around her."Thank you." Lay said, his voice trembling with relief. She moved back slightly, just enough room for Lay to slide the ring onto her finger. She held up her hand in awe. Lay raised his own hand, and entangled his fingers with hers."I promise." He whispered. Pain ripped through Lay. He had broken that promise. He would never be able to comfort her. Never be able to hold her. Never be able to make her happy. Lay leaned in, and pressed his lips onto hers. He pulled away, and knew that she would have felt nothing more than a slight breeze. His fingers grazed her lips, and he thought he saw her lips curl up into a smile in her deep slumber. Again, the voice penetrated his mind."If you know you cannot bring her joy, then leave her. Return to where you belong." The voice advised. "I belong with her." Lay fought back tiredly."Lying to yourself does little good." The voice hardened."I will do everything in my power to make her happier." Lay shot. The voice was silent for a few seconds."You have no power." Drifted the voice.----------------------------------------------------------AHAHAHAHAHA. how was that? ^^ I feel bad, I've been neglecting 'Heartbeat'. This is just so much fun to write
