The Letters (1/2)

Two Moons anywherebuthere 39660K 2023-11-03

Kai fiddled with the charcoal-colored letter as he tuned out the raspy voice of the teacher. It wasn't that he didn't care about his education, but he had more to anticipate than algebra and English grammar at the moment. Slowly and quietly, he ripped open the top, whincing at the sound it produced. Nobody ever really acknowledged his existence, and this was a time he was thankful for that. He pulled out the folded sheet of paper and set it in his lap.

Dear Kim Jongin,You are cordially invited to a special event. Come alone, and come as you are. Do not inform anybody of your whereabouts; do not fail to attend.

Time: 5:00 PM

Place: Gangnam-gu Ahpgujung-2dong 521 , Seoul, 413-830

-----

Lu Han chewed on the tip of his pen as he struggled to scribble down the notes. His Korean was fairly good at this point, but the professor talked rather fast, and he still had a fair bit to learn about the language. A woman's shrill voice spread through the classroom, interrupting the seminar. "I have a letter for one of your students, Lu Han."

He got out of his seat and bowed to the professor before scampering over and receiving the letter. He sat back down, yielding the black envelope with red wax enclosing it. Not able to contain his curiosity, he opened the paper carrier and read it. "What is it?" the boy asked from behind him. He thrust the letter into his blazer pocket and smiled. "Nothing."

-----

Baekhyun trudged over to the door with a bowl of ramen in hand. He opened the door, revealing a short mail-man sporting a dark cap. "Oh, is that for me?" he asked, quickly realizing how stupid his question was. The man set the letter in his hands and walked off without saying a word. Baekhyun shrugged and shut the metal door, setting his noodles aside as his phone rang. He brought it to his ear and listened as he recklessly tore open the envelope. Reading over the letter, he knit his eyebrows together in confusion. "I'll, uh, call you back."

-----

Lay was interrupted from his trance-like state as one of his dance mates walked in. "Yah, someone left this for you," she said, throwing the letter at his feet. He didn't bother to answer and opened the letter, squinting as the sweat rolled down his face.

"You should really take a shower." She wafted the air around her, making it evident that he was really in need of a shower or some type of cologne. He glanced at the clock perched on the black wall. "Um, I have to go," he said, grabbing his bag and fleeing out the door.

"Bye then!" she scoffed.

-----

"Kevin, don't forget: label's out," the old man chided, wagging his finger at the boy. He nodded in response and forced a smile. "Yes, I won't forget." He went back to frowning once the man left and grumpily shoved the cans onto the shelf. Working at a sub-par grocery store wasn't exactly what he'd planned on doing, but if he wanted to attend university, it was this or nothing. The man quickly returned with a black envelope in hand. "Someone just came, asking me to give this to you." He took the letter and bowed. Once the man left, he tore open the flap and read over the small paragraph. With a straight face, he shoved the paper into the front pocket of his apron.

A/N: Kris's English name is Kevin Wu, and his Chinese name is Wu Fan, just so everybody knows in case I use different names. And no, I didn't make up his English name, lol.

-----

He cascaded across the linoleum floor, swiftly picking up a slim wooden pole as he did so. "Tao, I have something for you," the instructor spoke, walking in. He handed over a letter now that Tao's lesson was over. "Good job. Your technique is getting much better." He ignored the man and gently opened the envelope while making his way over to his belongings. He picked up his bag and waved goodbye to his instructor. After checking the time on his phone, he ran to the bus stop, suspicious, yet also hoping he wouldn't be late.

-----

Chanyeol finished the last of his drink as his friends laughed at the joke he'd just made. He smiled and set his cup down, satisfied at his hilarity. A waitress walked over and handed him an envelope. "We already paid for -"

She shook her head and insisted he take the envelope. "No, this isn't your bill. That man ov-" she pointed over to the door, but nobody was there. She shrugged and left the letter on the table. He thanked her and analyzed the letter, checking to see who it might've been from.

"Open it," the one boy prompted. He daintily tore it open and quickly scanned over the black encrypted letters. "What time is it?"
