Gaining a Friend (1/1)
It’s already the third week of school and there are still no signs of the syndicate. If I won’t be able to find them sooner, I believe that I’m required to stay here a lot longer. I took a glimpse over to my right shoulder and observed Hyoyeon who was in the next table, busy reading her book. She then slowly placed her book on the table and turned to my direction. Oops, I just caught her attention. “Hi” She mouthed as she waved to me. I waved back and smiled awkwardly. She slightly opened her mouth as if she's about to say something but she just continued reading her book. After a couple of minutes of observing the young lady in the next table, someone suddenly tapped my shoulder. I raised my chin up to see the face of the person. I sighed to myself after realizing who it was—Doojoon. I bit my lip before I said, “What do you want now, Mr. Yoon?” “We just need OUR table.” He said, placing his hand on the table. He fidgeted his fingers impatiently, giving me a message that I need to move out of the table. “I’ll leave,” I said as I grabbed my books and my bag. I was about to leave when I sensed Hyoyeon coming to our direction. “Doojoon, how many times do I have to tell you to leave him alone?” Hyoyeon said, placing her hands on her waist. “I’m just telling him that this is our table.” He explained, raising his shoulders. Hyoyeon looked at him and just shook her head. “Whatever Doojoon,” she muttered. She looked at me and grabbed my wrist. “Just sit with me,” she said pulling me to her table. I glanced back and stuck my tongue out to Doojoon. “B-but Hyoyeon” Doojoon mumbled. He glanced to his friends and just rolled his eyes. He looked at me and showed me how he clenched his fist. I’m scared, right? “I’m really sorry if they keep annoying you. They’re always like that since high school.” Hyoyeon said. “It’s okay, I don’t really mind them.” I said, gazing over to the other table. The boys were so busy in their conversatiion that they forgot we can understand them. “What’s your name again?”She asked, closing her book and setting it aside in the corner of the table. “Lee J-Nuneo,” I stuttered nervously. My words almost slipped. “Lee JNuneo?” She crinkled her forehead. “It’s Lee Nuneo.” I said, correcting her. “I see. What a very interesting name.” She bit her lip as if she doesn’t know how to continue our conversation. “I guess you’re right huh?” I bit my lips. We both looked away shyly. No one wanted to talk. “Do you have any classes in the afternoon? Could you please help me in my lessons?” She grabbed my hand again, stopping my reverie. “Huh? Sure, I can help you but when and where?” I asked, furrowing my eyebrows. I glanced over to my hand and she was still holding it. She removed her grip from my hands when she started talking.“Let’s meet here at—,” she paused as she checked her watch. “4:30PM” “I guess I can do that.” I just shrugged my shoulders. “Thank you!” She said happily, showing her bright smile. Wait, did I just promise someone I’ll help her with her school work? 4:30pmI decided to sit on the table we sat on this morning. I grabbed a book in my bag and began flipping through its pages. For some unknown reason, I felt anxious. “Are you ready to be my study buddy?” Hyoyeon appeared. She walked closer and began arranging her books on the table. I nodded. Please not math…not math. “We’ll start with economics.” She then placed her economic book in the middle. Great…just great… Our study time took almost two hours but it was filled fun and interesting conversations. I learned a lot of things from her but I wonder if she learned something from me. “Do you want me to send you home?” I asked. This is a great opportunity to check her safety when she’s home. “Uhh.” She mumbled as if she’s looking for her answer “I think I can handle myself so you don’t have to.” She said, smiling. “I see that but I insist. It’s already dark outside and it’s dangerous to walk by yourself.” I said, pointing towards the window at the back of the school. “I think you’re right. Well, thanks!” She said, slightly hitting my arm. “No worries.” I said, giving her a thumb up. No worries. I’ll protect you. I promise.
