They pulled into a well-known steak house restaurant, CUT and he threw his keys to the valet, rushing to open Hyorin’s door for her. She got out as gracefully as ever, holding his hand.  She adjusted the hem of her dress before following him into the restaurant, she kept her composure as best she could. There was no way she was going to let him know what she was thinking.  He pulled her even closer to him when they arrived at the counter where the maître d' was awaiting them. The girl had a smile on her face as she greeted them, "Good evening, do you have reservations?" She asked him. "Yes, under Minho." He answered her, she looked up the name and smiled at him. "Welcome back, sir. Right this way." She said, telling the hostess to guide them to their table. They had an unobscured view of the sun setting on the horizon. She noticed that the table was very intimate, leaving her legs quite possibly between his underneath the table.  She sighed to herself, this was to be expected as she just realized what kind of person he was. Now, she had to suffer the consequences.  He pulled her chair out for her and she sat down graciously, she gave him a small smile, but he leaned down and demanded a small kiss from her. She pecked his lips once and pulled away quickly.  She didn’t need to feed into his fantasy anymore than she already had. He moved to sit across from her and the hostess gave them their menus. “Thank you.” Hyorin said politely to the girl.  The girl looked to Mr. Lee and he let out a grunt of appreciation. Hyorin frowned as she threw him a look but he didn’t look up from the menu to catch it. “I’ll leave you both to it then. The special is french onion soup with a prime cut of ribeye steak. A server will be back to take your order.” She said, walking away in a huff. The moment the girl walked away, Mr. Lee reached for Hyorin’s hand and she acquiesced quickly. He moved as close as he could and she could feel his thighs touching hers. “Can we just get the special and then get dessert later?” He asked her. Hyorin kept the frown off her lips, leaving a small smile. “If that’s what you want.” She said to him.  Mr. Lee gave her a big smile, “Good. Okay, now we just need a server.” He said, raising his hand up and calling a server over.  A young man in a waiter uniform walked over to them carrying two glasses of water. He set them down on the table gently and took out a pad to be ready for them. “My name is Hun and I’ll be your server for this evening. What would you like to order?” He asked them. Hyorin looked over at the server and he was rather cute, he had a sharp jawline, big eyes. His hair was perfectly messy, all black, she noticed that he had his ears pierced, but she could sense the gauge was fake.  He had rather calloused fingers and she had a hunch it was from playing a guitar of some sort. He had no shame looking her over either, she was rather pleased with herself of course. Her outfit was not just for her client, it was for the world and she liked the attention.  He smirked at her and she simply looked down demurely. Mr. Lee frowned angrily and he cleared his throat loudly, calling the attention back to himself. “Yes, sir, what can I get for you?” Hun asked the both of them, directing his attention to Mr. Lee. He kept his eyes off of his date and found trouble in doing so. It was weird to be so obviously checked out by someone on a date, he had never experienced that before.  And yet, Hun felt like he wanted her to catch him. She seemed like she wanted to trap him and make him do whatever she wanted, and he had no problem with that idea. “My date and I will have two orders of the special, I prefer my meat medium and she likes it rare.” Mr. Lee ordered, emphasizing his words, making it very clear that Hyorin was his.  Hun kept a straight face as he took the order down. “Very well. I shall get that started for the both of you.” He reached for their menus quickly, his hand brushing against Hyorin’s as he grabbed hers, a jolt of electricity shot through him but he abruptly ignored it.  He walked away and left the two of them to themselves once more. “You think he’s cute?” Mr. Lee asked her in disgust. Hyorin pursed her lips and shook her head from side to side, “He’s not bad.” She admitted, there was no way she could win in that situation. He would get mad at her for lying, and he would get mad at her for telling the truth.  “He’s much younger than you are, don’t you think?” Mr. Lee asked her, asserting his age and making himself sound better because of it. She gave him a small smile, “He’s irrelevant. I’m sorry for looking, sometimes I can’t help it, everyone can be a potential client.” She said to him. “I’m the only one for you. I already told you this. I called you for dinner, so you should pay attention to me.” Mr. Lee said sternly.  “Of course.” She said, bringing her hands down into her lap. She moved slowly so he wouldn’t notice, but then again, his eyes wouldn’t be able to pick up her movements anyway. He looked out the window and watched the sun set beside them. She opened her phone and pushed the number she saved on speed dial for moments like this.  She waited for the call to go through but she couldn’t hear anyone pick up, she only heard the voicemail message. She frowned to herself, what in the world was in doing, he always answered when she called for him. He promised to make sure she wouldn’t be with anyone crazy, because the last time that happened, all of them had gotten into trouble and they all had to run away. They were never welcome back to Shanghai again. She ended the call, some best friend he was being. She moved to put her phone away and gave it one last attempt. She dialed the number she had memorized, but her careful fingers pressed the wrong button and dialed a different number instead. In her haste to keep her phone under the table, she let it ring. She heard someone pick up but as soon as that happened she hung up immediately.  There, that would send him the distress signal. That was what they agreed on, if she ever needed to get out of a date. Hun came back with their food and she hid her phone quickly. He put the soup in front of the each of them carefully, giving Hyorin an extra smile as he did so. She reciprocated and delicately picked up her spoon, looking to Mr. Lee. “You’re giving him attention.” Mr. Lee said disgracefully. He stabbed his spoon through the melted cheese, hitting the bottom of the bowl angrily.  “He gave me food. I said thank you with a smile. That’s it.” Hyorin said plainly. She kept her tone polite, but this was going to get boring real fast. She hated it when guys got like this, she was purely using them for sex, that nothing more. That was the agreement that they had made with her madam.  “Still. He doesn’t need you to thank him.” Mr. Lee said, eating his soup. The cheese pulled as he lifted his spoon up, he chewed it so it wouldn’t drip soup all over the place. They ate in silence as he tried to reach for her hand again, she let him, but kept her distance a bit. Their entrees came soon after, and their empty soup bowls got taken away. Hun placed Mr. Lee’s food in front of him first, before placing the filet in front of Hyorin. “Enjoy your meal.” He said, directing it at her and he walked away after that. She looked at him in surprise but kept her reaction to herself for the most part. Mr. Lee said nothing as he cut into his steak. Again, they ate quietly. She sighed to herself as she took her first bite. The meat was delicious and she knew exactly why the restaurant was so famous. It was heavenly. Mr. Lee stole a glance at her and smirked, “You like it that much?” He asked her. “I like a good piece of meat.” She replied, taking another bite. It was really soft and tender, she mixed a bite with the mashed potatoes she had on her plate and all the garlic and butter just melted in her mouth. “You’ve said that before, that’s why I brought you here tonight as well.” Mr. Lee told her. They finished the rest of the meal and he took the check quickly.  “So, shall we go?” Mr. Lee said, standing up and holding out his arm to her.  Hyorin glanced around quickly but she noticed no one was coming. Apparently her calls were futile, he wasn’t going to show up and come around for her. “I’m sorry, Mr. Lee.” A male voice on her left spoke and she turned quickly, hiding her shock at the face she saw. “What’s wrong?” Mr. Lee asked the guy. He was wearing a suit and a hat, making it obvious he was a chauffeur of some sort. The man bowed lowly, “I’m so terribly sorry, but Miss Hyorin’s madam has requested her presence back at her place tonight. She wants to check in with her lady before anything else happens between the two of you.” He explained deftly, it was a reasonable request and Hyorin knew he could lie his way through it if Mr. Lee really pushed. “Oh, why is that?” Mr. Lee asked him, and of course, Mr. Lee would push for the answer. Hyorin turned to him and saw that familiar smirk on his face before it disappeared. “Miss Hyorin’s madam might allow you to be exclusive but first, she must check in with Miss Hyorin in order to ensure the safety of her ladies.” He said, lying through his teeth once more.  Mr. Lee frowned but acquiesced Hyorin to the chauffeur, “Very well.” He said, turning to Hyorin, “I shall see you next time then.” He said, leaving the restaurant by himself and Hyorin followed her chauffeur out the door. They kept up appearances until she climbed into the back seat of his 4-door black SUV. He climbed into the driver’s seat and shut the door. “What are you doing here?” Hyorin asked him as he put the car into gear and started to drive away. “You called me.” He replied to her. “I didn’t think you’d call me so quickly after you got my number.” “Zico, I didn’t call you.” She said. “But thank you.”  Zico smirked at her in the rearview mirror, “Sweetheart, check your phone. I swear you called me and hung up. Besides, you didn’t look like you were enjoying yourself much anyway.” He told her. Hyorin frowned to him and reached for her phone to check on it just for the sake of amusing him. She checked her call logs and sure enough, his number was the last one dialed and she frowned to herself as she noticed that she called Jihoon twice to no avail.  “Yeah, well, Mr. Lee is rather special now.” Hyorin told him. “I thought you said you were a big girl.” Zico joked playfully. “But where would you like to go, Miss Hyorin?” He asked her. “The usual place.” Hyorin answered and she stared out the window at all of the cars they were passing. ~ She wandered around the room, she noticed that it was a ballroom, something she had not been familiar with in the past. Only after the Change did she get accustomed to the more finer things in life.  It was all thanks to Katharine, of course but she still got introduced to it. She looked down at her gown and noticed that it was black and soft taffeta fabric. It was rather unusual for her since she had always thought it was rougher than that. But if it was something, Nathaniel had gotten for her, he would have considered that before making the dress. She picked up her skirt and it was lighter than she expected as well. It had three layers of ruffles and it was a strapless dress as well. The skirt was rather big, and as she twirled around she felt it move with her.  It was the perfect dress, honestly. She loved ball gowns that were on the simpler side and she liked black just as much as he did. It wasn't a color many girls wore to a ball, but she was always different. She saw that the room was filled with people, but their faces were all blurry to her. They weren't important but they danced around her and she suddenly felt out of place.  A very gracious pale hand was held out in front of her and she smiled immediately recognizing who it was. She placed her hand in his and curtsied appropriately, "Nathaniel." She breathed softly. He smiled at her and brought her hand to his lips. "Madeleine, you look beautiful as always." He complimented her and took pleasure in seeing the flush on her cheeks.  That would be something that could only happen in their dreams. Blush was no longer feasible for the both of them, but he would reminisce nonetheless.  He pulled gently, bringing her into his arms and he held her right hand, putting his right hand on her waist, her left hand falling naturally onto his shoulder. He smiled at her and she gave him a look. “Dance with me?” He asked her, a little late since he was already dancing with her at that point. Madeleine moved around gracefully, following his lead as they danced around the room, ignoring the other couples. Her dress swayed this way and that, and yet Nathaniel never stepped on the hem. The lights dimmed slightly and she noticed that all the other couples had disappeared from the room leaving the two of them behind. Nathaniel stopped dancing but pulled her close to him. “Madeleine.” He said seriously and she felt her heart race. He clearly had something that he wanted to say to her, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to hear it. She couldn’t take it if he was going to try for her again. She didn’t want to try again, they were never going to work. Her heart would always belong to him, but he could not be with her. Elizabeth would never allow it. “Madeleine.” He repeated again, noticing that she was getting lost in her thoughts. “I love you.”  She sighed softly, “You know I love you too.” She replied to him. “I always have.” His arms wrapped around her waist and she naturally wrapped her arms around his neck. “As I have too. But you know I want to try again. I won’t let you run away from me this time.” He told her. “You always run away when I find you again.” He leaned in close to her and she didn’t shy away form him. “I can’t let myself get hurt by you again.” She said, “You can’t pick me, Elizabeth will never allow that.” She told him, closing her eyes with a sigh. She felt his fingers grab her chin to look up at him again, his forehead pressed against hers and she held her breath. “Hey, I will find a way this time. Centuries of being with her has caused a huge rift between us. She won’t be able to stop me this time.” He assured her, he gently pressed his lips against hers and she instantly reciprocated. She hated how easy it was to fall into this with him, how natural it was for both of them. And yet, it was nearly impossible to be together because of outside forces. Even after they had been around for centuries. She kissed him back with every ounce of strength she had, to show him that she did love him, and that she wanted to believe him. But she couldn’t let him break her heart again, she couldn’t make it through that again. When she pulled away from him, she opened her eyes and found herself in her own bedroom again. Her body wishing for his warmth against her once more, she hated the dream world that they had been able to create. It made her miss him, but he had assured her they would make it this time, Elizabeth would be unable to stop them. And if he truly meant that, then they would be seeing each other again soon. Something she both hoped and dreaded for. Author's Note;;
