As if she knows (1/2)

“Make way please!”

The nurses pushed a stretcher that would bring Wendy back to her room after they examined her condition. Irene was torn between following her or staying behind to get an update from the doctor but she decided to stay since from her quick glance just now, Wendy seemed to be asleep.

“How is she, doctor?” Irene sprang up from her seat as soon as she saw the Doctor M. Nasir leaving the examination room.

“She’s fine. Thankfully, she was not badly injured. Her muscles have not yet recovered and she overstrained them when she ran out of the room. There should be no major problems, she just needs to get extra rest. She should avoid walking for a couple of days and we’ll even postpone her physical therapy for a while, then we’ll see how it goes. She has scratches on her limbs and even on her back but even those aren’t major. They have been treated, but it’ll be good to apply ointment to relieve the pain and make them dry faster.”

Irene made a note to buy an ointment for Wendy later. Unfortunately, she let her mind wandered a little farther and as she imagined applying ointment on Wendy’s back, a blush crept on her face. ‘S-sure,” she stuttered, avoiding the knowing gaze of the man standing in front of her.

“I’m curious about something though, Miss Bae. What caused her to run out of the hospital? It was as if she knew you were about to get into an accident again.”

Dr. M. Nasir narrowed his eyes at Irene but his guess was as good as hers since she was at loss as well. She had been thinking about it while waiting anxiously for Wendy’s check-up but her mind drew blank every time.

“I’m not sure. I was out to buy some food for myself and her for our breakfast tomorrow before I saw her running towards me and pushed me to the ground, away from the falling debris. She told me soon after that she was hungry so she came out to look for me since I took too long.”

The doctor hummed as a reply, he still seemed a little curious but it seemed he understood what happened a little better now. Suddenly, he let out a chuckle.

“Well, looks like she saved your life again this time.”

Irene gave a half-hearted smile. Her heart was unsettled. She could not be sure on how to feel about the truthful comment. Wendy had indeed saved her life, not once but twice.

Her reply came out as a half whisper, “That’s true…”

“It’s amazing, isn’t it? It’s as if she knows what’s about to happen.” Dr. M. Nasir remarked casually.

“All in all considered, I think she really cares about you, so it’s not too late for you to repair your relationship with her, whatever it was that happened between the both of you.”

It’s as if she knows what’s about to happen...

The words rang in her ears, slowly seeping into her brain. The doctor was right. She traced back her thoughts and it really seemed hard to believe for Wendy to walk outside of the hospital just because she was hungry. In fact, she remembered one of the nurses who was pushing Wendy’s stretcher grumbled because Wendy ran out of her room like a madwoman with a purpose.

Irene shook her head and brushed off the thoughts. There was no way Wendy could know what was about to happen right? It was just a coincidence.

A very well-timed coincidence.

“I hope so too, Dr, but it might be a little difficult.” Irene sighed before continuing, “May I see her now?”

Dr. M. Nasir nodded empathetically, the concern on his face for the woman who was around his daughter’s age evident for everyone to see. “Yes, you may. She’s being brought back to her room right now. But it might be best for you to not wake her up. Like I said, she needed all the rest she can get for now. Her whole body will be in pain when she wakes up tomorrow.”

Irene nodded and bowed a little to thank the man before her. “Thank you, Dr.”
