Part Nine

Three days had passed and the house was as awkward as ever. Sungmin felt like a stranger, like a transfer student in a class, being eyed on and bullied. He was adjusting, trying his best to fit in, to help and to not be a burden. He had seen Kyuhyun’s attacks in those three days, and at first he was glued to his spot like what had happened before. He couldn’t move, but when Kyuhyun caught his eyes, he snapped back and aided him. He knew he should stop being a coward, he should have gotten over this and so he tried.

Sungmin forced himself to make up to them, to make them feel that he was indeed back. He knew it won’t be a piece of cake; he had broken trusts and betrayed people who loved him. It was indeed, tough, especially with Jongwoon’s continuous banters and Heechul’s glares.

Heechul… Kim Heechul.

Sungmin finally met the psychologist, Kyuhyun’s doctor. He was too candid, tactless for someone is his field. But Heechul had strengthened Kyuhyun, he was responsible for the man’s uplifting aura and Sungmin couldn’t complain. He is Kyuhyun’s friend and savior.

The man had been ignoring him though. Every time he would try to open up a conversation, ask the doctor how Kyuhyun coped up; find out if he could ameliorate the situation little by little, Heechul would turn his back from him, pretending not to see him.

Kyuhyun was, thank goodness, being civil towards him, in fact, kind. But Heechul wasn’t and Sungmin could feel the burning stares the doctor would give him.

It was the third afternoon since he had stepped inside the familiar apartment. Kyuhyun was tucked in bed; he just finished his physical therapy and was advised to rest. Sungmin allowed himself to settle in the living room as the younger fell into a slumber, choosing to murder the remote control and rid his mind of thoughts. Jongwoon had left for a duty at the hospital and Ryeowook was out to meet his editor, a little peace of mind… just what Sungmin needed but could not attain. He was alone with Kyuhyun again and he was thankful that the man wasn’t making it too difficult for him. Kyuhyun was just silent most of the time, shy or awkward, he couldn’t figure but at least he wasn’t throwing him any form of disgust; at least the younger was civil.

The door suddenly opened, making Sungmin jump in surprise. The young doctor burst inside the apartment, a basket in hand. He stopped immediately as Sungmin stood before him, noticing the lack of people in the house. Rolling his eyes, Heechul turned to the direction of Kyuhyun’s room and barged in.

“Kyuhyun, wake up! I brought you strawberries.”

Sungmin followed suit, surprised by the doctor’s actions. “What are you doing?”

Heechul ignored him still and sat across Kyuhyun’s bed. The younger was sedated with downers, and would not wake up soon, not even with Heechul’s screams.

“He had just rested, please. You could wait at the living room.” Sungmin forced a calmed tone.

In all honesty, he was trying to be patient with Heechul. The doctor would intentionally piss him from time to time, ignoring him and his pleads. He would even bump onto him intentionally and snob him. “Heechul-ssi.”

The doctor let out a soft ‘tch’ before walking out of the room, brushing his shoulder with Sungmin not too gently. Sungmin balled his fists and followed.

“I know how much pain I am to you,” he spoke as the doctor sat onto the counter nibbling on his fingertips. “But if --we both wanted to help Kyuhyun, you should stop.-“

He was cut off as soon as Heechul let out a mocking laugh. He was shaking his head as he mumbled words Sungmin failed to catch.

Sungmin did not know how long the doctor was bluffing but as soon as he was able to halt his laughter, Heechul finally spoke to him. If it was good or a bad thing, Sungmin did not know. “Such irony, don’t you think,” the doctor eyed him. “..Sungmin-ssi.” Sungmin did not like the stress placed on his name. It was… accusing.

“You’re here to help Kyuhyun, make him feel better, when you are the cause of his utter demise for more than a year. Are you really that stupid?”
