He is alive.” He said with a smile. He looked like a puppy that was praised for being good.      “W-when can I see him?!” I asked eagerly, now sitting on my knees to keep myself steady.      “I contacted his superior and got permission for him to take a day off to spend some time with you. He will be coming to see you tomorrow.” He said trying to remember all of the details. I let out a sigh of relief and felt my heart beating furiously in my chest.  I can see oppa again!He’s alive!    Turning back to him, I-         “I’m so sorry but I just realized that I don’t know your name…” I said embarrassed. He turned to me with a warm and sweet smile.      “It’s Baekhyun. Byun Baekhyun.”         “I’m-“     “Kumamoto Annie, right? I made sure I knew my mate’s name before you woke up. I blushed at hearing how he said my name.      “S-so we’re ‘mates’?” I asked, face still burning.         “Yes we are.” He said matter-of-factly as he placed his hand on mine. I looked up to meet his gaze and he stared at me the way my parents look at each other-lovingly. I bit my bottom lip, unsure of what to do. He sighed, keeping his placid smile.      “About a hundred years ago, the vampire society started to have trouble keeping mates bonded. So the head researchers conducted an experiment with the next batch of ‘sacrifices’. Those turned by someone of the same sex, are called the unbonded. The unbonded can either find a mate amongst the unbonded, or they can stay unbonded and become soldiers. Now, with this new experiement, the researchers hand-picked five of the top students from the group of unbonded who were turned ten years before. These top five were then given the opportunity to choose their mate at the sacrificing ceremony. Those who weren’t picked, then become unbonded and can pick a mate from the sacrifices ten years after them.” He stopped and I nodded.      “So you were sacrificed ten years ago, am I correct?” I asked and he nodded.      “And then how did you come to pick me as your mate?” He smiled and I watched him, confused.      “Your scent.” He answered simply with his knowing smile.      “My…scent?” I asked and he nodded.      “It was told in the history of vampire kind that a ten year age difference is what is needed to create a strong mating bond. And because of this, the researchers used the unbonded from ten years previous to allow them to pick a mate. However, they never found out why. And yet it has worked ever since. Those who pick annually somehow find their perfect mate and are able to create a strong bond. Sometimes it does not work; like this year.” He said, nodding to me.      “What…didn’t work?” I asked, now completely lost.      “During the ceremony, do you remember the first vampire that tried to claim you?” He asked and I nodded slowly, remembering the vampire’s sly smile and his voice when he whispered to me.
