Chapter 28 (1/1)

A week passed before Jonghyun saw Kibum again. He decided to give him distance so he could cool down before he’d approach the younger. In the mean time Jonghyun tried to immerse himself into his work to let the time pass. Kibum did not once leave his mind. “Jonghyun-ah, I’m leaving,” Minho called from across the room, tossing a ring of keys tothe man behind the counter. Jonghyun absentmindedly caught the metal pieces and nodded, returning back to reading an abandoned magazine he found on one of the tables. When he did not receive an answer, Minho inquired, “Hyung, are you okay?” Jonghyun simply showed a tight smile and nodded his head gently. The taller man was never told the outcome of Jonghyun’s predicament. That is, he didn’t know if Kibum knew about Jonghyun’s predicament. It was safe to say Kibum left, since his coworker tried to hide his moping, and he never saw the younger boy around the cafe as he usually did. “Sorry ‘bout your eye, man,” he said, one foot out the door already. Jonghyun only smiled, eyes scanning the pages. “It’s fine,” he said, voice hoarse from being silent all day. It was cleared when he said, “I deserved it.” Jonghyun waited twenty minutes before preparing for closing. He remained standing behind the counter pretending to read the magazine while he resisted the urge to look across the street where the boy named Kibum worked. He knew Key had dinner meetings with executives every Friday nights and those usually lasted until 9.  Jonghyun closed the front doors and locked the bottom deadbolt with his foot. Someone up there was on Jonghyun’s side, he knew, when he heard Kibum across the street among a group of people exiting a side stairwell across the street. He timidly shoved his hands in his pockets and tried to find him in the sea of dark suits. A flash of bright red was seen and he knew it was Kibum. Jonghyun watched intently as the younger boy mingled with the black ties, not once looking in his direction. He had a pain in his chest; Kibum wasn’t looking for him across the street. Not even a glance.  Right before he left the group and descended down the street, to Jonghyun’s luck, Kibum looked up to the apartment he used to live in and the cafe he used to occupy. Jonghyun’s heart skipped a beat when he made eye contact with the brunette so far away. Immediately, Kibum’s expression turned to stone in a fearful manner when he spotted his ex lover. The older called him over with his hand, but Kibum ignored him and continued walking. “Fuck,” Jonghyun mumbled, hands turning to fists. He felt like punching the newspaper machine next to him but the last thing he needed was a criminal record. He walked home.  All was quiet in the small apartment when he arrived. The only sounds Jonghyun could hear were the buzzing of the fridge and his heart beating (Key, Key, Key). Jessica was no doubt sleeping in his and Kibum’s bed. The mere thought angered him; she couldn’t—and would never— take his place. He walked into the bedroom and saw the girl peacefully sleeping in the middle, chest rising and falling gently between the sheets.  A wave of guilt rolled over him when he saw her innocently asleep. She didn’t deserve the shit he was putting her through, even if she wasn’t aware of it yet. She’d been nothing but good to him and he treated her like dirt. Jessica deserved better than a cheating asshole. “I’m sorry, Jess,” he whispered. That night Jonghyun slept on the couch. It felt too awkward to sleep in the same bed as his “girlfriend”. Sleep did not visit him easily; a violent American film was on TV and that occupied him until early hours in the morning. The red lights flashing on Jonghyun’s pathetic body on the couch finally put him to sleep while he wondered where it all went wrong.   Flashback Jonghyun kicked the door open and placed the grocery bags on the kitchen table. “Jessica, come help,” he called. Besides doing laundry, the only thing Jonghyun despised was putting groceries away. When he got no response, he called out one more time. All he could hear were soft noises of someone sobbing. Jonghyun ran to their shared bedroom to find Jessica on the tiled floor of the bathroom, head buried between her knees. She looked up with black streaks of make up pooling under her eyes and reached out for her boyfriend. Jonghyun dropped to his knees to hold her. “Jess, are you okay?” he asked frantically, looking for any sort of bruise or broken glass around. “What’s wrong?” Jessica just sobbed harder and clung to his shirt now stained with tears. She pointed to the sink above them to a white stick. He got up and saw it.Two simple pink lines appeared on the strip. Pregnant. Jonghyun felt his knees go weak. He sat on the porcelain lid of the toilet and held his head up with his hands. He didn’t know what to do. She grabbed a tissue from the counter to wipe away her tears. “What are we going to do, Jjong?”  He didn’t know what to say. He was hardly 21 and his girlfriend was pregnant. He didn’t have a steady job. He didn’t have any savings. He was too young. They were too young. Jonghyun stood up and leaned his forehead against the doorframe. He pulled his fist back as if to punch it but dully hit it with a thud. “I’m so sorry, Jonghyun.” He looked over to Jessica. It all made sense, now. A few weeks earlier Jonghyun discovered the condom broke after she fell asleep. He thought nothing of it, since it’s happened before and she was on the pill, and he chose not to tell her. Now all of it was falling down on them. He pulled her up from the ground and hugged her tightly. “It’s not your fault, baby,” he reassured but shuddered at the last word. It was both their faults. “It’s not your fault.”  holy shit im back. miss me? ha just kidding. newwww chapter is upppppppppp. the part in italics is a flashback. if you remember itll make sense. ooOOooOoOoooOooOOOooOooOOOoOOoooo ive started on two other fics the other day which i should probably finish this one first but no fuq i do wat i wunt. enjoy my dears <3
