Alternative universe wherein Nayeon's decisions were different and she had found Mina along the way.
~~~~~~The whispers are everywhere. Almost all eyes are on Nayeon when she walked past the hallway filled by unfamiliar students. She hangs her head low, and continued to walk in haste.They are probably looking at her because she's new. It made Nayeon feel uncomfortable, like she's not welcome, and she'll never fit in."Hey dumbass, watch where you're going!" a harsh voice startled her when she bumps onto someone accidentally. "Sorry." she murmurs and marches away instantly. She ignores all other noises, unnecessary voices.Nayeon settles herself inside the library. She checks the time on the wall clock and then looks at the admission letter on her hands, which also lists her schedule. Nayeon still has an hour before her next class. She never made it in time for the first one, she got lost along her way to school.It's the third university that she enrolled herself into in the span of five months. Nayeon doesn't want to raise her hopes up anymore, she'll probably leave after few weeks again. Her life is a mess and she doesn't know if it will ever be fixed.Maybe it won't."Uhh.." Nayeon feels the presence of another person nearby. She lifts her head to see who it was. "You need to go to your classroom. It's a protocol, thirty minutes before class, students should be in the room already." the girl relays gently."I'm new." Nayeon reasons out."I assumed, that's why I'm telling you this. You don't want to be in detention during your first day right?"Nayeon chuckles. Her life is like a prison, detention is nothing. But seeing how sincere the girl appears to be, Nayeon swallows the words back and stands up from her seat."Okay." she nods subtly.The woman was about to leave, it was automatic, Nayeon reaches for the lady's arm to stop her. She immediately let go when she felt something flowing like an electricity, the same time the girl shrieks in surprise. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." Nayeon felt bashful at her own actions. She could have just called her without touching the girl."No, it's fine. Is there anything that you need?"Nayeon doesn't know what was happening. Why was she feeling weird the first time their eyes met. They are strangers, they don't know each other."Hey? Are you okay? You're spacing out." the woman waves a hand close to Nayeon's face to catch her attention."Yes. I- I'm fine." Nayeon blinks and hides her hands behind. She's sweating uncontrollably, her heart is racing for a reason she has no idea of. "Could you tell me where this is?" she's thankful she made the words that she needed to ask out despite feeling a bit hazy. Nayeon shows the girl the letter and points on the name of the section she's enrolled to."We're in the same class!" the tone sounded genuinely glad. It made Nayeon feel things, again. "My name is Mina by the way.""Mina." she unconsciously repeated."Yes. Myoui Mina." Mina smiles.Nayeon returns the same expression. "I'm Nayeon. Im Nayeon.""I'm happy to meet you.""Me too, Mina." Nayeon replies, still wearing a smile.~Being with Mina and her friends made Nayeon feel at ease somehow. It's been years since she felt this way that she almost forgot what it seems like.Momo and Sana are the loud ones, while Mina just keeps still in the corner and would laugh at their antics. But everytime Nayeon remembers that she'll probably lose them in a matter of time that those people who keep on chasing her father will find them, her eyes would automatically start to sting, and her chest would feel tight. She doesn't want to leave. She doesn't want to be forgotten again."You're no fun! Bros before hoes, Sana." Momo whines loudly, breaking Nayeon's reverie."Jihyo is not a hoe. And your face is all I see here and in our apartment, stop being clingy."Sana already left before Momo could clap back. Momo pouts and turns her head towards Nayeon's direction. "Should I look for a girlfriend too? My best friend seems happy, what do you say Nayeon?""About what?" Nayeon frowns at the sudden question."Would you like to go out with me? And then let's see." Momo giggles."Ohh, shut up Mo. Here, eat this." Mina interrupts."Ooww. Aww!" Momo complains while her mouth is full. "This is yummy but you pushed it too hard to my mouth." she says, voice coated by a tiny bit of hurting tone.Mina glares and that made Nayeon laugh. Mina shifts her attention towards Nayeon and raises a brow. "What's funny?"Nayeon shrugs and leans closer to Mina. "If I didn't know better, I would think you're being jealous."The younger one pushes Nayeon's face away. "Get off your high horse, Im."Nayeon lets out a laugh again.~There was something different with how Mina was acting this day. Mina is most of the time silent, but Nayeon barely saw her laugh, or even smile for the past hours. It was obvious, the girl is troubled by something.Nayeon approaches Momo to ask if something happened; Momo only answered Mina misses her home.Frankly speaking, Nayeon couldn't understand that sentiment. Her relationship with her family is not something to be missed about, that's for her. But Mina's situation is different. She can feel how much Mina longs and loves her family, it made Nayeon feel insecure somehow. She silently wished hers could be like that too.After class, Nayeon quickly runs to catch up on Mina who was already planning to go home. Mina acted adamant to all of Sana and Momo's request to hang out and eventually the girls gave up. However, Nayeon is as persistent as she's hardheaded.
"I won't let you be alone knowing you'll just cry.""I won't cry." Mina denies.Her orbs say otherwise. The tears are already swelling and just a little push, they will flow out like a river. "Sure. But, cry when you're with me." Nayeon holds her wrist and tugs her."Where are you taking me?""Nowhere. Aimlessly walking, feeling the breeze. Just thinking about nothing. It's satisfying, Mina." Nayeon assures."Okay." Mina softly replies.They didn't notice how the time passed swiftly. Before they knew it, it was almost nine in the evening. Nayeon would be in so much trouble, but she chose to ignore all the worries and focused on what's before her eyes. They were busy, they were occupied by the warm feelings filling their whole being caused by each other's presence."It's actually my birthday today." Mina shares.Nayeon stops at her track. "I- I didn't know. I don't even have something I can give you. You should have told me.""Nayeon, it's fine. You don't need to ramble." Mina calms her by fondling her cheek. Nayeon felt her skin rather on fire after that mere touch instead of calming down. It's ridiculous. And when Nayeon thought, her heart couldn't race any faster, Mina suddenly lunges and places a kiss on her cheek. Nayeon's eyes grow wide."Thank you for staying with me. It's more than enough as a gift." Mina whispers.Nayeon could still feel the lingering warmth from the pair of lips that marked her cheek even after Mina retracted.They were about to part ways, but Mina calls her name again."Nayeon, see you tomorrow at school.""See you."~There was no Nayeon the next day.Or the next days after that.~They met accidentally in a convenience store after few weeks. It was late, Mina decided to go out and buy a drink to keep her awake amidst of studies and worries.Nayeon could almost feel the anger in the way Mina laid her eyes on her. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to disappear." Nayeon says even when Mina didn't ask anything.The previous emotion reflected by Mina's orbs gradually dissipated and was replaced by disappointment. Nayeon had to swallow the bitter taste in her mouth. She didn't want Mina to know what's really happening. Nayeon can't tell Mina that her father made her stop going to school again because he can't provide for his
