The One That Got Away (1/1)
Jihee pulled her coat tighter as the wind blew harder toward her direction. It was one cloudy morning when she decided to walk around the river. She smiled while inhaling the air, oh how much she loved the weather.“It’s going to rain soon,” a deep hushky voice waking her up from her daydreaming. She knew precisely whose that voice belong to. She wanted to run away from him, but then it would show him that she still had the remaining feeling for him and she wouldn’t want him to know that.“It’s your favorite weather,” he said again, raising one of his hands and looking up to the sky.Jihee smiled and nodded her head. The man in front of her knew her really well. She wouldn’t be surprised if he still remembered every little details about her. It brought her a tingling sensation on her stomach. She could feel how much she still yearned for him even after all these years past. But it was all vanished when she took one glance at a ring on her sweet finger. Suddenly it felt so heavy.“Would you like to drink coffee with me? It’s on me,” he flashed her a smile that she always loved to see. She wanted to reject the offer because she knew that it won’t do her any good. She knew that it will only bring back all the sweet yet painful memory she shared with him. But she did the otherwise as she nodding her head to him. ~~ “One green tea latte and one vanilla frappucino, please,” Kris said to the waiter. Jihee couldn’t help but stare at him. Of course he still remembered.“You are so awfully quite, today,” as he sipped his green tea latte soon after it arrived on their table.“I am quite,” Jihee shortly answered.“But not around me.”“People change.”Jihee noticed how cold she was in his eyes. She didn’t mean to be rude, but the words were just naturally escaped from her mouth.“I was shocked when Yixing asked me to be his best man, moreover when I found out that you are the bride,” he once again sipped his drink.Jihee only nodded in response. She really didn’t know what to say. She felt her mouth just shut off.“It’s actually funny,” he said, “It should have been the otherwise. I—““Don’t bring up the past,” Jihee cut him before he could finish his sentence. She had to do this because she knew exactly what Kris was going to say if she didn’t stop him earlier.Kris stared at a woman sat before him. If only he didn’t cheat, if only he wasn’t confused with his heart, he should’ve realized that it was always her on his mind and his heart. He loved her, he always loved her with all his heart. He admitted that he was a jerk for breaking her heart. Jihee was the woman he swore to always protect from anything, to be the first one to wipe her tears, yet he was the one who broke her heart and brought countless tears on her face. Even if he apologized thousand times to her, he knew that it would never heal all the pain he caused. Now the woman he loved was going to be married with his best friend. Never it crossed his mind that Jihee was going to be a wife of someone else. He always pictured that it was him and Jihee stood at the altar, lived their marriage life in their dream house with their kids running around them. But he already lost her, the love of his life.“I still love you, Jihee. I always love you,” Kris said out of the blue. The confession caught Jihee out of her guard. She nearly dropped her glass. That’s it, she thought. Any more seconds she stayed there, any more seconds she listened to him, everything will be ruined. Everything was complicated now. Too many people wil be hurted if she just followed her heart. Because she knew, her heart will only belong to Kris. She always knew the painful fact.Jihee abruptly stood after hearing Kris’ confession. But before she could walk away from him, Kris reacted fast. He grabbed Jihee’s wrist and took her out of the café. He took her to the river bank.Jihee flinched from the suddent contact. She didn’t prepare for any of it. “Let me go, Kris. Please,” she pleaded to him. “I love Yixing and I’m going to be his wife soon,” she tried to pry off Kris’ strong grip.“You love him as a best friend, Jihee. Admit that. You don’t love him like you love me.”“Kris, please don’t do this,” she pleaded again. She bit her lips, trying to hold her tears.“I really love you, Jihee. I know that I messed up really bad. I broke your heart into pieces. But please, let me be the one to fix it.”Jihee could feel how her body trembled now. She couldn’t hold her tears anymore. “Why,” as tears slowly escaped from her eyes, “Why don’t you let me be happy? You have Soomin, just be with her. She is a good girl and she loves you so much.”“But I don’t love her like I love you, Jihee. I love you, only you.”Jihee let out a small chuckle, “You didn’t say that when you dumped me.” She took out her necklace that she had been keeping inside her shirt. There was a ring attached to the necklace. Kris immediately recognized the ring. It was the one he gave her on their first anniversary. Jihee pulled off the ring and handed it to Kris. “I don’t even know why I’m still keeping this. But I guess I should give it back to you,” she flashed him a sad smile. “I’m engaged to Yixing, your best friend. Maybe you are right that I only love him as a best friend. But I believe that my feeling will grow over the time. I will learn to love him, as a lover.”“But—““And by that time, I’m sure that you’ll forget me already, Kris. You have Soomin and I have Yixing, let’s just go to our separate ways.”“Look into my eyes and tell me that you still love me,” Kris suddenly said, startling Jihee.Jihee heaved out a deep sigh. This time she decided to follow what her heart told her. “I love you, Kris. I still do,” as she put one of her hands on Kris’ face, caressing it slowly. “But it’s too complicated now. Let’s just move on, okay? Our love story will be a beautiful chapter in my life, the one that I will never forget.”Kris caressed Jihee’s face, feeling the feature of her face. Then he slowly leaned and kissed her. Everything happened so naturally. Jihee didn’t even pull back. Both of them just wanted to savour the moment. After minutes of breathtaking kiss, Jihee pulled away. But Kris’ hand still held her face gently. Kris rested his forehead on Jihee’s. “I’m sorry for everything, Jihee. I love you, I really love you with all of my heart.”Jihee smiled at him and cupped his face so that he would be facing her. “I love you, too.” A tear rolled off her eyes but it was soon wiped off by Kris. “But this is the end for our story, Kris. Good bye.”With that Jihee walked away from him. She left him without glancing even once. And Kris knew that he already lost her, that everything was over between them.
