A Family For Christmas (1/1)
Xiumin was just about to roll over and go back to sleep when suddenly a dead weight landed on him. “Minny wake up!” Before he knew what was going on, his eyes barely open; he suddenly found a box shoved under his nose, Sarah’s eager face behind it. “Merry Christmas!” She smiled as he sat up, taking the gift, the small box looking dainty between his hands with bright colors and delicately curled ribbons that surrounded it. “What is it?” he asked, tipping it to the left and the right, inspecting it as if he could see through the package. “Open it!” she pressed. He looked up at her face; he had never seen her look so ecstatic about something so trivial. Slowly he removed the ribbon, then the wrapping, only being left with a simple box. When he opened the box he was met yet again with more wrapping paper, colorfully designed with various patterns. Reaching inside his fingers groped in the box, coming in contact with something wooden and smooth. Not being able to guess what it was by touch he pulled it out. He smiled as he found a picture in a wooden frame. It was a picture of him and Sarah, they were smiling and making the “V” sign. He didn’t remember even taking this picture “Sarah wow, I don’t even remember taking this, when—” “You don’t remember because I took it when we were cleaning and I was “pretending” to take pictures.” She beamed, making quotes with her fingers. He was amazed and didn’t know what to say, it was such a heartfelt gift. “Do you like it?” She asked. He couldn’t help but smile, “I love it.” He leaned forward, wrapping her in his arms and hugging her tightly. Because he didn't let go for a while she tapped his arm, making a fake gasping noise, “okay okay, I'm glad you like it, but I would still like to breathe air thanks.” She chuckled as he let go. “You're not going anywhere today are you?” He asked, setting the picture up on the nightstand beside the bed. “Today? I think later on, but not right now, why?" "I was thinking that maybe if you weren't busy then we can go out together and I can have you help me pick out a present for you," He chuckle awkwardly, scratching the back of his neck, "Since... I'm not sure what to get you." She giggled, "Sure thing! I have an idea for a present." She stood up and took a step back. "Oh?" He raised his eyebrows. He wondered what she had in mind. "What is it?" He asked inquiringly. "You helping me make breakfast!" She exclaimed excitedly, grabbing his hands and pulling him along behind her to the kitchen; the blanket on the bed falling onto the floor forgotten as clinking and shuffling of dishes filled the kitchen. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~“Okay, now we put this in herrrreeee… Oops-not that bowl.” Xiumin chuckled to himself as Sarah moved around the kitchen, flying around, chopping and steaming the vegetables while he whisked the eggs that they were going to steam later. “Sarah move the knife so you don't stab you self.” Xiumin warned her as she stood dangerously close to the knife she had just used; the blade had managed to point off the edge of the counter. “Oh! Yeah,” he watched her just push it to the side, rolling his eyes at how carefree she seemed about cooking even though she could be dangerous. She peeked at the eggs, giving an ‘ok’ sign with her hand for Xiumin to pour them in the steamer. The noise of the cold eggs sizzling as they met the warm broth was music to his ears. If it wasn't so hot he would have been taste testing it while it cooked. Turning their kitchen into a playground Xiumin and Sarah began playing basketball with the vegetables, tossing them this way and that, trying to make it into the pot without making the broth splash everywhere, high fiving when one of them would make it with a perfect shot. Music was soon added to the mix as they played the radio in the background, singing and dancing around with various utensils and objects in the kitchen, Xiumin setting out the plates and flatware on the table while Sarah turned off the stove, letting the contents in the pot cool a little before setting it on the table between the two plates on a holder. "Mm," Xiumin took a deep breath, breathing in the sweet yet tangy scent of the eggs, "Smells so good." "Bet it tastes good too." Sarah laughed, digging in right away. Copying her motions Xiumin quickly dug in too, both receiving the consequences of the hot food that included them fanning their mouths and repeating 'hot hot hot' over and over again until they could swallow; causing both to laugh heartily with amusement. Once they finished their breakfast they cleaned up together as the radio continued to play in the background, making for a lively clean up along with the cheery Christmas mood that seemed to fill the air. From there they both showered and changed their clothes, getting ready to spend the day out together like Xiumin had promised; they gathered up Furgus, putting on his halter and leash they left the house. Xiumin shivered as the cold air met his warm face, immediately making his cheeks rosy and his eyes dry. He looked over at Sarah and saw her looking up at the bright yet grey sky. "To bad it hasn't snowed yet, it would've been so fun to wake up to the sunrise gleaming off the fresh powder while kids make snowmen and snow angels; also, Furgus could get stuck in the snow and I could laugh at him." Sarah chuckled to herself as Xiumin could have sworn the dog turned to look offended at the words spoken about him. "Wow, book standards much?" He teased with a smile. "What can I say," she smiled back, "I'm a dreamer." Xiumin couldn’t stop himself from still smiling as they walked along, it was already started off to a good day and yet it had barely begun. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~As they passed by shops Sarah linked her arm with Xiumins’, they talked and laughed while looking at the many people who passed them, enjoying the happy bubbly atmosphere from those surrounding them. Christmas was always a time for giving, and when it came time for the season everyone seemed to become more positive and happy; with the occasional negative person of course, but that didn't seem to deter those in the Christmas mood. Xiumin noticed that many of the shops had different shaped lights like that of snowflakes, snowmen and even a couple with reindeer along with hand cut snowflakes if the owners had children; other more professional businesses had window paintings to settle in with the season and make their customers feel a little of that Christmas cheer. Even the various street vendors were in the season, selling hats, scarves and mittens along with their usual vendibles. Xiumin loved how much the lower part of the city felt like a close knit community. “Hey, wanna get something warm to drink since well, it's morning and I'm still sleepy.” Xiumin gave a small yawn as he smiled as if to signify that he needed caffeine to boost his body's energy level. "Sure! Cocoa sounds good to me." Sarah beamed, walking to a quaint little café with Xiumin in tow. She tired Furgus to the leg of a park bench in which he casually hopped up and sat down, as if knowing that he was to wait there until the duo came back. Xiumin smiled and patted his head. Furgus was such a good dog and he was sure that he was the best that there possibly could be in terms of animal companionship. “Good boy.” He smiled, following Sarah’s lead inside. The café they entered was very pink. Rose colored walls adorned with pictures of pastel colored flowers; tables had pink tablecloths and the chairs had matching seat cushions. The booths in the corner were also pink with brown polka dots. Lights hanging from the ceiling emitted a pinkish glow. As he looked around while they were walking up to the counter he noticed that all of the staff members wore a pink apron over a white shirt and pants the same color brown as the polka dots on the bottom had been. Even though there was a fair amount of people, the café itself looked very homey and gave a calming feeling once you walked through the doors. He felt a gentle tug on his arm and didn’t realize that during his inspection of the place he didn’t hear that Sarah had been talking. "Sorry, what?" "What did you want to drink." She asked. "Oh..." He looked at the board behind the waitress that served as the snack and refreshment list. 'It's Christmas, why not splurge a little.' He thought. "I'll have a latte" "Whipped topping?" The waitress asked. "Yes please." "And for you?" The waitress turned to look at Sarah who squinted up at the board. "A large hot cocoa for me, with whipped topping and a cherry please." She smiled at the waitress who applied their order to the register and told them their price. Both of them reached for their wallets, and fighting like the internal siblings they felt like, Xiumin finally won and slid his money over before she could protest. She pretended to be mad but he could tell that she was smiling and he knew that she would try to pay him back later. Once they received their order they chose to sit at a table near the window. "you know," Sarah started, Xiumin looking up from where he had been stirring his cream into his chocolate and quirked an eyebrow. “Even though It’s been a rough year for me, I’m really glad that I get to spend today with you.” She smiled, taking his hand between both of hers as she spoke. A sparkle in her eyes showed how genuinely happy she was to just have someone to spend Christmas with. “Me too,” He smiled, bringing his other hand up to clasp hers, “You’ve helped me more than you know, and it’s nice to have someone that I can just be myself around.” She nodded in agreement, letting her hands slide back to her mug which she then lifted to her lips; Xiumin copying her movements and doing the same. Time seemed to pass oh so slowly as they sat together, enjoying their cocoa and talking about the different people that walked by outside of their window. He was thankful that even though he was not one to have many people around him that he considered family, Sarah was here for him. Sometimes it seemed almost unreal, like this was how it had been from the very beginning; no mobs, no death; just them as a family. When finally they had finished they both tossed their cups in the trash and made their way back outside into the cold weather. Linking his arm with Sarahs’ and untying Furgus Xiumin smiled brightly, “Where to now?” he asked. “Hmm, I’m not sure. Any place you wanna go?” “You have to choose today,” He chuckled and she rolled her eyes with a smile. “How about we just walk until we see something…oh!” Xiumin turned his attention to the direction she was looking but was unsure just exactly what she was looking at that had distracted her all of a sudden. “Let’s do that!” She exclaimed excitedly, grabbing his hand and pulling him over to a photo booth. He stumbled as she practically shoved him inside, quickly slipping a few coins into the machine for the required cost and giggling as she squeezed in beside him before signaling for Furgus to climb into their laps where he immediately sat down. If Xiumin hadn’t known any better he would’ve assumed that Furgus was posing. Sarah pressed the start button, both posing as they waited for the countdown before the picture was taken. Xiumin laughed at their various poses, the two only smiling genuinely for the last picture before exiting the booth and taking their pictures. They laughed and smiled as they made comments about each picture and which one they liked the most. To anyone else who didn’t know them they looked like a couple, but from their point of view they looked like a happy little family. “I love these.” Sarah beamed, folding them along their lines and placing them in her back pocket. “We should totally put these in a frame next to our other picture.” She smiled up at him as they began walking again. “Definitely.” He agreed. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~For the majority of the day they mostly window shopped, looking at all of the really expensive things that they wanted but couldn’t afford and laughing that only the rich people could afford such trivial things such as cars and breakable yet useless items. Along the way Xiumin finally did buy Sarah a real present when they walked into a small school supplies store and she talked about how she had been thinking of buying a satchel so that she could carry things around with her but not have a fear of it getting stolen from her like a purse would. They ultimately chose one that was grey and brown and had a cartoon character on it along with many pockets for multiple areas of storage. She hugged him tightly after he paid for it and they left the shop. Thanking him and telling him that he was the best. He couldn’t help but smile. It was Christmas after all, giving didn’t hurt any. “What should we do now?” Xiumin asked as they sat on one of the benches outside a small convenience store. He assumed that by now it was probably noon which would mean it was time for lunch. “Are you hungry?” Sarah asked. Xiumin mentally laughing to himself at how alike minded they seemed to be. “Just a bit, any place in particular you want to go?” “Hmmm…” they both sat in silence for a moment, Sarah pondering what places would be a good choice for lunch and coming up with pretty much nothing. They were only interrupted from their thoughts when Furgus gave a quite bark and pulled on his leash. Both Xiumin and Sarah looked up, seeing Furgus trying to lead them in a direction he thought best. Not saying a word they both stood up, Sarah being pulled by Furgus and followed by Xiumin until they came to a small shop that was not far from where they had been sitting. As he looked up at the shop Xiumin realized that it was a shop that specialized in all different forms for cooking pork. He chuckled when he looked down at Furgus who just stared at them and wiggled his tail before turning back to the shop. “Well… I think Furgus made our decision for us.” He smiled at Sarah. “Yep.” She agreed. They ordered their food quickly, choosing to eat outside so that they could share the lovely warm portions with the extremely intent corgi who would stare them both down if they took too long to feed him another piece of meat. It was almost comical how Furgus seemed to anticipate who would be the person to finish their piece of pork and reach down for another, almost as if he could mind read for who was going to feed him faster. They spent the next couple hours leisurely eating before finishing their food and strolling around a bit more before deciding to head home as they were starting to get a bit cold and Furgus also seemed to be running low on energy. When they arrived home both flopped on the couch, Xiumin releasing Furgus from the clutches of his harness and letting the tired pup waddle his way over to his bed where he proceeded to circle twice before laying down and falling asleep almost instantly. Having settled in on the couch, a movie seemed like a good way to pass time. Sarah fell asleep almost halfway through, Xiumin finding himself dozing here and there as it continued, trying his hardest to stay awake. Just as he was about to nod off he heard the light sound of his cellphone ringing in his pocket. Without even looking at the ID he answered sleepily. “Yeoboseyo.” “Xiumin.” “Xiumins’ eyes immediately opened wider; sitting up straighter he tried to sound less like he had just been about to fall asleep as he heard Chens’ voice on the other end of the line. “H-hey.” He answered back. “Where would you like to meet today-night. Tonight.” Chen stuttering over his words but quickly correcting himself, it could have been considered cute by anyone's standard, but Xiumin was looking at this from a tactical point of view and he'd just have to play his part to win Chen over. “Let's meet..." Xiumin almost didn't know what to say, he definitely didn't want Chen to know where he lived, but he also didn't want to meet at his place either. He cleared his throat, he had made up his mind quickly, he knew exactly where to meet. “Let's meet at…” ***People always said that dating should come easily to oneself; in the case of Chen, he was worried out of his mind. Sure he had been on dates before with his ex, but for some reason this felt different, very different. Dating his ex had been like being a flower to a bee, only one side profited. Okay, so maybe it was more like a brick wall to a sledgehammer; because all she did was tear him down. Yet the date that he had planned to go on with Xiumin made his nerves all jittery as to what could happen. He was almost embarrassed with himself because of this, but let it slide due to his long break time between dating periods. Checking one more time in the mirror he ran a hand through his hair, only to smooth it back down into place before returning to his bedroom and grabbing his jacket, quickly slipping it on and exiting his apartment. He dropped by the store, thinking that he might pick up a couple things to make for dinner, only later realizing that he of course was terrible at cooking so he decided to leave it at that and assumed that he'd probably pick up something later on their way back to his apartment, not that Xiumin would know that. Chen smiled to himself as he exited the store; although ultimately defeated by the grocery store he was still prepared to have something specially made for Xiumin as a nice romantic dinner. Yeah, it did seem cheesy, but it was worth it. From there, Chens' next idea was to find a gift, something that Xiumin would know was specifically meant for him. If there was one thing that had been a positive from being in a relationship with his ex it had been learning that every person wanted to always be treated as an individual rather than your generic movie setups. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~For the next hour Chen walked around different shops, nothing really catching his interest until he came across a jewelry store. Now, he may not be the best at picking out the jewelry himself, but he did know the jewelers helped a lot. When he finished picking out just what he wanted he sat down on a bench not far from the store; pulling out the small yet perfectly wrapped gift. It was wrapped with half the box in sparkling silver and other half wrapped in a bright red like that of the Christmas theme, It was finished off with a red and silver bow to compliment the packaging. He smiled down at it, perfectly content with his decision, as was the sales associate. Turning it over again and again in his hands the giddy feeling once again bubbled up in his chest. He was really looking forward to this date. He pulled his cellphone from his jacket pocket and looked at the time. Another half hour and it would be time for them to meet up. He still needed to call Xiumin and pick a place to meet. Taking a deep breath he scrolled through his contacts and pressed Xiumin. Waiting patiently yet somewhat impatiently he listened to the sound of the phone ringing. “Yeoboseyo?” Xiumins’ voice came over the other end of the line, albeit sounding tired. “Xiumin.” Not knowing how else to start the conversation Chens’ brain decided to pick the first thing that came to mind, that being Xiumins’ name. “H-hey.” Xiumin answered back. Swallowing, Chen continued. “Where would you like to meet today-night. Tonight.” He quickly corrected himself, stuttering in the process and feeling embarrassed. “Let's meet…” Xiumin paused; Chen holding his breath as to not miss what he said. “Let's meet at… the bridge in the park near the jewelry store.” Realizing that he was sitting in that exact place almost surprised Chen; if he didn't know Xiumin any better he'd assume that he was spying on him, but then again his secretary was not really one for surprises, unless they were planned by other people. “Chen?” Only when Xiumin said his name did Chen realize he hadn't said a word in return. “Oh, ah yeah. Sounds great.” He smiled, even though he knew the other couldn't see him. “Meet me in half and hour?” He asked. “Uh, sure.” “Alright I'll see you then.” “Okay.” With that Xiumin hung up. Chen put his phone back in his jacket pocket before standing up and tossing the bag from the jewelry store into the garbage, placing the small gift into his other pocket. Knowing that he had some time before he had to meet up with Xiumin he decided to take a stroll and keep himself warm, now all he had to do was wait. ***Xiumin ran a hand over his face, letting a deep sigh release before looking over at Sarah who slept comfortably on the couch unknowing of what happened in the world around her at this point. He gently moved a strand of hair from her face before slowly sliding her head off of where it rested on his lap and to a bunched up section of the blanket on the couch. Raising his hands above his head he stretched his tired limbs before standing. After all these years of avoiding his boss and now here he was, about to go on a date with the very same person. Where in his life had it decided to torture him like this; dangling bait right in front of his face and yet not letting him reach out and grab it. As per his usual routine he leaned over to grab his bag, stopping himself midway when he realized that this wasn't a job, he didn't need his bag. It was weird for him to leave behind a daily staple in his life. He shook his head, taking his wallet and stuffing it into his back pocket. Walking to the bathroom he looked at his tired appearance; eyes still looking as though they lacked sleep, face gaunt, cheek bones looking even more prominent than they had before. How would someone like Chen, a person running a top company find him in any way attractive, especially in this state. He let the faucet run a bit as he splashed his face with cold water, trying to wake himself up from his still tired state. He took a deep breath before walking out of the bathroom, looking at Sarah once again. When he saw that she hadn't moved he quietly crept past, the clock on the wall showing just past the hour, meaning he had enough time to make it to meet Chen. He caught the bus just before it left its stop; hoping that it would get him to his destination quicker than his own two feet would, although, one never knew how it would go when it came to public transportation. Just as he assumed, the bus was a much easier alternative in comparison to his walking. Which he of course didn't mind, seeing as how it was a bit later in the day so that meant very few people on the bus. When he finally arrived he took a moment to view his surroundings, almost immediately he saw Chen sitting on a bench all by himself, the bench he had of course suggested to meet at. Taking a deep breath he casually strolled in Chens’ direction. “Heya stranger.” Xiumin stated awkwardly, cracking an even more awkward smile. Chen looked up, almost startled by the casual introduction. “You made it.” “Well of course I did.” Xiumin coughed, just to close the awkward silence that stretched between them there after. Chen smiled brightly. If anything, Xiumin thought Chen was too happy about this. “So, where would you like to get started?” Chen asked. “Shall we just walk around and see what's going on?” Xiumin smiled back, trying his hardest not to grit his teeth at how weird this situation felt to him. “Sure, sounds like a good idea.” ‘Well, Xiumin thought, “now there's only one thing to do, play into his emotions, then I'm one step closer to my goal.’ ***This was the first time that Chen had gone out on a date since he had started dating his ex-girlfriend. But this was already ten times better than any of those dates had been. He smiled at Xiumins’ semi childish ways and laughed at some small things that Xiumin seemed to enjoy which would be something normal to anyone else. Almost without thinking about it Xiumin would grab Chens’ hand and pull him along to something he found interesting, pointing and saying something that was too fast for Chen to catch because of Xiumins’ excitement. They ordered coffee, sipping the hot liquid as they walked along in the chilly night air of the city. It was getting close to winter and the weather was showing it by colder temperatures and frost beginning to cover things along with the mist from their breath turning white in the air. They sat on the bench in the middle of the park, taking in all the colorful lights of the shops and the people who strolled by, smiling and laughing to each other in pairs. Chen looked over at Xiumin who seemed entranced with something in a shops window not too far from where they sat. “Ooh look!” Suddenly Xiumin stood up, turning to pull Chen up from where he sat. He pointed and began to pull Chen behind him. As they got closer to where Xiumin had been watching Chen noticed that it was a restaurant. Chen smiled; it was so like Xiumin to think of food first. “Can we? Can we?” Xiumin practically pleaded, clinging onto the arm without the coffee. “Of course.” Chen ruffled Xiumins' hair before walking into the restaurant. The restaurant was very small and simple. People sat down at the tables on the floor and pillows served as their seat. They ordered two of the basic dishes that Xiumin had thought would taste the best, feeding each other what they had ordered. The food was delicious and Chen thought that maybe they should come back again in the future. Once they had finished their food they began strolling outside, looking through the shop windows at some of the things they liked. Halfway through their walk Chen found his fingers interlaced with Xiumins’, although Xiumin didn’t seem to notice… or didn’t mind. They talked and laughed, enjoying their time together. “This has been a really fun day.” Chen smiled over at Xiumin who returned it. “Yeah it has been, I've really enjoyed today.” Xiumin lightly swung their arms back and forth as they strolled along the lowly lit bridge. “Shall we sit for a while? My feet are killing me.” Xiumin pulled Chen to sit down next to him on the bench. Feeling like this was an opportune time Chen slowly began to pull the small box from his pocket. ***Merry Christmas.” Chen smiled, holding out a small intricately wrapped container towards Xiumin who took it. Being as neat and tidy as he could he unwrapped the box before opening it. He didn’t know what to say as he stared down into the box. There were two bracelets that had a metal section in the middle, both engraved with a name. One said Xiumin and the other said Chen, accompanied by a symbol; the one after Xiumins’ name was a snowflake and the one by Chens' was a scorpion with a lightning symbol for a tail. “Thank you.” He said, immediately reaching for the one with his name on it. “Here, this one is for you.” Chen grabbed the bracelet with his own name on it and clipped it on Xiumins’ wrist with a satisfied smile. “And this one’s mine.” He took the other bracelet, which had Xiumins’ name and clipped it onto his own wrist. “Oh?” Xiumin was confused. Wasn’t he supposed to have the one with his name? “I got matching ones so that whenever you look at it you will think of me.” Chen beamed. He looked so happy about all of this; whereas Xiumin felt horrible. ‘Watch out little boy, you’re playing with fire.’ He thought. A fire that was bound to do him in one way or another, and he would never see it coming. “Why the snowflake?” He asked, examining the bracelet that now adorned Chens' wrist with his name. Was it because he had a cold heart or came off as cold or something of the sort. “Because when I’m with you it feels like time just stops.” Xiumin saw a light tinge show on Chens' cheeks, definitely not from the cold. He was blushing. ‘Oh how cheesy you are.’ Xiumins’ internal running mechanism was now on overdrive, everything that told him to run from the situation were all in concurrence with one another, while the other part to spill everything clashed alongside it. His brain ruling over his heart because it didn’t want to be hurt again like the first time all over again. He mentally shook his head. He had no choice; this was his mission and he was going to finish it no matter what happened. Feelings aside. “Oh.” Was all he said in return. “And the lightning?” He asked, looking down at the bracelet on his own wrist. “For the little shocks and surprises you give me every time I learn more about you.” Xiumin smiled, taking Chens' hands in his as he leaned forward. “Merry Christmas.” He replied, closing the distance between them to kiss Chen. Both blind to the world around them as the snow began to fall gently, surrounding them in a fairy tale setting of soft lights, cold snow and warm hearts. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~“So,” Xiumin looked at his feet as they walked along, casually kicking at a small stone on the ground to keep himself from feeling jittery, “does this make us official now?” Not needing anything more than a subtle sentence he knew Chen would pick up on what he was saying right away. The latter looked down at their joined hands and smiled back up at Xiumin. “Yeah, I guess it does.” ‘What have you just gotten yourself in to.’ Xiumin mentally scolded himself. Not only did he have to play pretend, but now he also had to play boyfriend as well. “Hey, wanna go to my place?” Chen asked, gently squeezing Xiumins' hand that was still linked with his. “Uh, sure. It is getting kinda cold anyway.” He chuckled back. They barely spoke as they headed back to Chens’ apartment, occasionally making small talk when they came across something they found interesting. This time when he arrived at the apartment building Chen lived in he felt different, yet not from the last time he had been here. Of course, when he was here last he was a bit… impaired. Xiumin slowly pulled out his phone when they stepped into the elevator. Even though it was Christmas there was also a high possibility of getting called to a job, better to call Kyungsoo now so that he wouldn’t have to worry about his cover being blown if he called and Chen answered. Just as he began to punch in kyungsoos’ number Chen reached over to press the number for the floor, accidentally knocking Xiumins’ phone out of his hand. It was all in slow motion, they both just barely missed it as it fell to the floor, sliding right between the closing doors as they came together. They both just stared as they heard a crushing noise and the elevator began to go up; Xiumin was sure that he looked absolutely horrified by his phone being crushed. Internally he kind of was because that was his only lifeline to his number one job and one only knew what would happen to a person if they didn’t answer the boss’ call. “I. Am. So sorry.” Chen slowly turned to look at him, also wearing a worried expression from the event. “Let me buy you another one.” “No no, it’s alright.” Xiumin protested. He didn’t want to add on another guilt for when he offed Chen later then had to face it by looking at his phone every day. “I insist.” Without another word from Xiumin Chen pressed the down button, grabbing Xiumins’ wrist when they arrived at the ground floor and pulled him along to the cell phone store. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Never in his life had he himself come into a cellphone store, since the boss had given the phones to them when they began this was a bit overwhelming. So many different types of phones lined the walls, all different shapes and sizes, not to mention a whole section dedicated to just cases and accessories. Chen turned to him as he still stood in awe of such mechanics, speaking to get his attention, making him jump a little. “So, which one do you like.” “What?” What did he mean which one, these were all way too fancy for him. “Pick any phone, you were due for an upgrade anyway.” He chuckled. Feeling slightly offended that no one seemed to appreciate his dinosaur phone he turned away to look at the price of the nearest phone, almost feeling faint by just reading the hellishly overly expensive items price. This was definitely a rich peoples’ store, obviously one of which he was not. “Are you sure about this.” He turned to look at Chen skeptically. “Of course,” Chen smiled brightly, “it’s my repayment for ruining your phone.” He scrunched his nose as he processed whether or not to refuse again, knowing Chen for as much as he did right now he knew if he himself didn’t choose then Chen would probably just buy one for him anyway without his consent. “Fine, which one do you have.” “What?” “What phone do you have.” “Oh, why?” “Because I’ll get that one. Realization crossed Chens’ face. “Okay,” he smiled, “follow me.” ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~He couldn’t believe this, the hole he had begin to dig was only getting deeper and deeper and he had no way to back out now. This was so unfair. Oh how Sehun would have mocked him if he knew how much he was putting into this one job. “Uh, thank you.” Xiumin looked down and turned his phone over in his hands, still feeling like this wasn’t really happening. “No problem.” Chen smiled. He looked way too happy in Xiumins’ eyes. “I know it’s a bit different from your old phone…okay, a lot different,” he added when Xiumin raised an eyebrow, “but I think you’ll have no trouble at all with it once you get the hang of it.” “Yeah…” Xiumin stared down at the empty phone, unsure what to do with it now. “Hey, let’s do one thing.” Chen suggested. “Hmm?” Xiumin looked up at his eager face. Chen pointed out areas to press on the phone, Xiumin following suit, not realizing what Chen was doing when the front facing camera came on. “What-“ Chen held up the phone and smiled, “say cheese.” He took the picture when Xiumin smiled too, obviously happy with himself when he looked at the end result; automatically setting it as the background photo. “Perfect.” To Xiumin Chen seemed like those guys that you see in those cheesy romantic comedies that was what every girl wanted. Too bad the world would have one less perfect man soon. Did he just say perfect? He meant cheesy. Coming back to the apartment felt weird. It was as clean as it had been the last time, but now with all the lights on, and the fact that he wasn’t hurrying out of it he could now see that everything was neat and tidy. Damn how he wished he could put his life together the way that Chen did his apartment. “Make yourself at home.” Chen motioned towards the large expanse of room; taking Xiumins’ jacket and hanging it on the coat rack near the door. Why did he have to be such a gentleman too. Xiumin decided to take a seat on the couch, following the most clear path with the open space that his eyes led him to. “Would you like to watch a movie?” Chen asked, coming over to sit by him. “Sure.” Xiumin settled in closer to Chen as the latter picked up the remote and scanned for something they said they’d both like to watch. The room slowly got darker as the movie progressed, both engrossed to the point that Xiumin didn’t even realize until after the movie had ended that Chens’ arm was around his shoulders. As the credits rolled Chen raised his eyebrows as he sat up and looked at Xiumin, “dinner?” Xiumin nodded, “definitely.” Xiumin scrunched his eyebrows when Chen pulled out his phone. “Hello pizza-“ Xiumin quickly grabbed his phone and pressed the end call button. “What are you doing?” “Ordering dinner?” Chen gave him a questioning look. “And here I thought you were going to spoil me by cooking dinner.” Xiumin elbowed him as he stood, making his way into Chens’ kitchen. “Well I mean… I would but…” Chen scratched the back of his neck awkwardly, “I can’t really cook, at all.” Xiumin smirked. Guess Mr. Perfect isn’t so perfect after all. "Fine, I'll do it." To tease Xiumin grabbed the front of chens' shirt and pulled him along behind him to the kitchen. Even without Chens' guidance on where to find the various cooking utensils he'd need he seemed to navigate through the seemingly unused kitchen with ease, all materials clean and put away along with the order from largest to smallest which made things so much easier follow. Immediately setting to work he had Chen do the smaller jobs like stirring the eggs and milk in a bowl. He planned to make the same food that Sarah and he had had this morning for breakfast; seeing as how he really liked it and it was easy to make, not to mention was easy to help with if one was an inexperienced cook. Copying the exact same way Sarah had made this meal this morning made Xiumin smile. If Chen hadn’t been there he probably would have danced a little too. Sarah seemed to be contagious to him with her happy-go-lucky personality; he wasn't used to it but he guessed it was starting to grow on him, and he actually didn't mind. After adding everything together he leaned forward to inhale the scent of the boiling broth. It was heavenly, the smell of the broth wafting through the air and catching the attention of Chen who sat patiently at the table scrolling through his phone. “Mmm that smells so good.” Getting up from where he sat Chen came over, slipping his arms around Xiumins’ waist and leaning his chin on the latters shoulder to peek at the food being cooked on the stove. "Wow, that looks as good as it smells; who knew I'd find a boyfriend who was a great cook." He gave Xiumin a gentle squeeze the other giving a quiet chuckle, more out of awkwardness than anything else. When the broth finally finished Chen released Xiumin who proceeded to grab bowls and eating utensils, setting them at the table where Chen had sat himself down again. Xiumin smiled into the smell of the broth as he took another deep inhalation, very proud of his achievement. Chen wasted no time at all digging into his own bowl, a look of satisfaction immediately crossing his face when he swallowed. "Wow, this is amazing, how'd you learn to cook like this." Surprise very apparent in his features. Xiumin gave a slight smile and a chuckle; thinking back to this morning where he and Sarah had enjoyed their little cooking session with just each other and the enjoyment of their conjoined company. Also, their short-lived dance party while cooking. His chest felt warm from reminiscing about how perfect he and Sarahs' lives were when they were with each other. He was thankful that he had cooked something so warm so that he could use that to blame if Chen questioned the slight tinge of pink on his cheeks that came from his internal fuzzy feelings. Replying back simply, all he said was, "a good friend." Chen didn't need to know about Sarah, not that it mattered either way since for one, Chen wasn't in the mob with him, so he wouldn't be hunting Sarah down to kill her like the others had; and two, Chen wouldn't be living that much longer anyway if the plan worked out accordingly. Which of course Xiumin would find a way to work out, since he had never failed the dom before. Now he was in the perfect position, and one that wouldn’t cause any suspicion, which was an utmost perfect opportunity. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~Once dinner was finished they cleaned their dinnerware and put it away together before Chen followed Xiumin to the door. As much as it would have been no problem at all for him to stay the night here he really didn’t want to leave Sarah alone for the night. Christmas was a time for family and right now Sarah was the only family he had, and there was no way he was going to let her be by herself after her terrible year. Sure, love and romance were showcased during the holiday season, but out of the two the most important thing to him would be the love of a family. "You're not going to spend the night?" Chen asked, watching as Xiumin slowly took his jacket off the coat rack and pulled it on. "Sorry, not tonight. But maybe next time." He gave a sorry smile when he saw Chens' face drop a little hearing this. After a long moment of silence Xiumin took a step forward, taking Chens' hands in his. "Merry Christmas." He whispered, leaning in just enough to lightly brush his lips of the others in a chaste yet sweet kiss. "Merry Christmas." Chen whispered back. With that Xiumin turned for the door, no hesitations or even a turn of his head as he turned the knob and exited the apartment, the door closing securely behind him. Walking down the hall and to the elevator seemed to take forever even though the hallway was absolutely bare. Once he was inside he quickly pressed the down button, only relaxing and slumping against the back wall when the doors finally closed. He let out a deep breath. Jeez, playing pretend was so exhausting. He couldn’t wait for all of this to be over so he could just go back to his boring life of working for the mob and doing whatever illegal stuff he was told to do, according to the law anyway. The trip home was quiet, pretty much silent seeing as how everyone was probably home enjoying Christmas with their family or loved ones. He stared out the window of the bus as it drove down the road, only he and one other passenger being the only patrons riding at this late hour. He let out another deep sigh, his breath fogging up the cold window. Lifting his finger he slowly began to trace words on the cold window, 'I'm sorry.' He mentally apologized to Chen for leaving him alone on Christmas but he had someone else already in mind that needed his attention more than anyone else, and because she was so important to him he would always place her first; and Furgus, since it was a package deal, not that he minded. Finally he arrived at his stop, silently sliding out of the bus and continuing on his way. He huffed out a cold breath as he took out his phone, the background image still surprising him everytime he looked at it. The only other time he'd taken pictures like this, apart from Sarah was with his ex, and to put it blatantly, those memories were neither happy or something good he wanted to remember. 'Well, new boyfriend new phone.' He mentally shrugged as he proceeded on. The walk from the station felt like it took way longer in the dark than it did in the day time, and to say the least, he was tired and just wanted to sleep. Walking up to the door he slowly turned the knob and tiptoed his way into the house, closing the door behind himself only to be greeted by the sound of the television in the other room playing a low murmur for whatever movie was currently playing. "Sarah? I'm home" He whispered quietly, making his way into the Livingroom. He smiled gently as he saw her still asleep on the couch, just in a different position, Furgus lying on the ground upside down beside the couch where Sarahs' hand still lay on his stomach. This was perfect, his family was here in this room, sleeping to the sound of the low television and content with life. This, was family. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~About half a month had passed since Christmas now and Xiumin was yet again finding himself invited to a party for another friend. Atleast this one was someone he was actually truly friends with. The favored birthday boy today was Kyungsoo. He had talked to Kyungsoo a couple days prior and they had decided that before the birthday party he and Kyungsoo would go out for a special lunch at Kyungsoos' seemingly favorite new restaurant. It was during the week so Xiumin had decided that he would take off from his day job to spend it with Kyungsoo because he was a good friend. As they made their way to the restaurant Xiumin felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. Slowly reaching in his pocket, he pulled the phone out just enough to look at who was calling, his hand immediately pushing the phone back into his pocket when he saw who it was. Chen. "What are you going to have today for lunch, the special?" Xiumin teased. Even though Kyungsoo and Jongin had become close; or so it seemed, Kyungsoo was still very shy around the latter and Xiumin just had to take this opportunity because throughout all the years they had known each other and this was the first time Kyungsoo was actually a bit self-conscious around someone. Turning to react to his comment Kyungsoo just stuck his tongue out just before they entered the restaurant. They immediately found their usual spot in Jongins' section and waited patiently for the other to show up and wait for their order; even though it literally never changed. Xiumin looked around when he didn't see Jongin anywhere. His eyes turned to the waiter who was their server today and noticed a subtle look of disappointment on Kyungsoos' face when the server told them that Jongin had the day off today. When the waiter left Xiumin felt his phone vibrate again and took it out of his pocket, the ID showing Chen again. He sighed and rolled his eyes as he placed the phone on the table, not realizing that this was the first time Kyungsoo saw his new phone. "Wow Xiumin, where'd you get that phone? Steal it?" He joked, chuckling to himself. "Pfft, no, it was a Christmas present." "Ooh, from who?" Kyungsoo inquired. He looked down at the phone lying on the table, vibrating from time to time as it rang. He was sure Chen probably wanted to know why Xiumin didn't come in for work today, but Xiumin didn't know what he should say, so he just didn’t answer. "Chen." he answered quietly. "Oh." Kyungsoo looked very surprised at this moment. "Wow, after all those years of me nagging you about changing it, and all it took was someone else to convince you." He snapped his fingers as if in disappointment, "I should've known, I would have had someone else talk you into it sooner." He broke into a smile, not being able to keep his serious façade any longer. "Yeah yeah, whatever." Xiumn rolled his eyes, but couldn't help himself but smile at the teasing. Their lunch passed by quietly, even the buzzing of his phone stopping after a while. Even though they hadn't seen the person Kyungsoo had been looking forward to seeing it was still a nice lunch just between the two of them. "What do you plan on doing till the party this evening." Xiumin asked, wiping his fingers from the juice of his sandwich that had dripped during consumption. "uhhh," Kyungsoo tapped his index finger against his chin. "Well, I needed to go shopping because Sehun keeps picking on me and telling me that I need to update my wardrobe because all my clothes have been the same for the past five years." He chuckled, "We aren't all fashionistas like him yanno." Xiumin laughed. Oh how accurate that was; even though Sehun was a big part of the mob he always dressed like he was on some important business meeting, minus the suit of course. "Most definitely."
After a long pause Kyungsoo spoke again. "Well, atleast he doesn’t make fun of me as much as he does you."
"Oh really." Xiumin leaned forward and raised an inquiring eyebrow. "And what does he say about me." "That you look like a homeless person and you bring the morale of the mob down." Kyungsoo couldn’t contain himself anymore and laughed outright at the statement. "Oh come on, I'm not that bad." Xiumin lightly punched his arm as he smiled. He knew he wasn't the most well-dressed person when it came to the mob but he didn't think he looked quite homeless. "Have you seen yourself, your clothes are way too big, either that or you're a skeleton. Although both together could also be plausible." The latter smirked. "You should be glad we're in a public place or else I'd kick you right now." Xiumin could feel the smile on his face widen as the other laughed and waved off the comment. This was why he and Kyungsoo were such good friends. Sure they cared a lot about the others wellbeing, but they could also make mean and subtly hurtful jokes but they understood it was all in good fun. Not much longer and they started to make their way out of the restaurant, enjoying the feeling of being full thanks to a good lunch. As they walked down the sidewalk they talked about what places they wanted to go to look for clothes while enjoying the empty sidewalks along with the slightly chilly air. "So I was thinking that maybe-" Kyungsoo was mid-sentence when suddenly his phone rang. Pulling it from his pocket he answered quickly. "Yeoboseyo?" There was a moment of silence as they both waited in anticipation for what was being said on the other end of the phone. "Kyungsoo," It was Sehuns' voice. "Have you been able to get ahold of Xiumin, I can't seem to contact him."
"Yeah, he's right here with me, what do you need Sehun?" "Oh good. We have a job to do." Both stood still waiting for the next order that they knew was to come. "The dom has put everyone on high alert because there've been reports of the reds being hostile towards the other gangs, he sending us out as a scout group because there's been whispers of reds crossing borders and treading where they ought not to." As if telepathically communicating Kyungsoo and Xiumin nodded together at the statement, knowing good and well what they were going to have to do. "Alright, what area are we scoping?" Kyungsoo inquired. "Down past the main square between the high-rise companies there's a couple of small shops including a flower arrangement and candy shop, we'll take the alleyway from there and follow it through the city because of the many sightings in that area." "Alright, We'll meet you there immediately." Xiumin answered. "Okay I'll see you both in a moment then." With that Sehun hung up. It made sense to Xiumin that a rivalry would happen at one point or another, but the biggest thing that bugged him was the fact that, what was the reason all of a sudden. Had the reds learned that they had stolen from them? Sure the blacks were their biggest competition, but why not confront them right away rather than invading the smaller mobs. The only viable answer was power. Were the reds after the power of the blacks gang; and if so why didn't they just have an outright throw down like old times. He'd been around long enough to know that there must be something brewing that was much much worse than he could imagine. All he had to do at this point was defend his honor which at this very moment would be his mob family. "Shall we skip shopping then." Kyungsoo slipped his phone back into his pocket and looked at Xiumin who was spacing out a bit due to his internal conflictions. "Ah, yeah yeah, lets go meet with Sehun." Kyungsoo nodded and they both took off across town. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~When they arrived they were a bit surprised to find no one but themselves there. "Do you think he ditched?" Kyungsoo whispered. "Nah, he might've been called to something else, although... he didn't give us any other details so what do we do now?" Just as they were about to turn around suddenly they saw Sehun step from around the corner from where they had just come, on his face he had a big round bruise just under his eye. Unable to speak they both just stared at him until he was standing right in front of them, arms crossed and an annoyed expression worn on his face. "Wow. Shit." Kyungsoo spoke first, "What happened to you?" "Some asshole punched me when I was getting coffee because he thought I had been trying to make a move with his girlfriend when I was just trying to squeeze by to get to the counter. It was so packed in there, god I hate public places." Xiumin and Kyungsoo looked at each other, a slightly twinge of sympathy for the caffeine fueled younger man. They watched as he rolled his eyes, ultimately talking to himself as he continued, "As if I'd go after a brunette." Realizing that the other two were still standing there looking at him he raised his hands, "Sorry, sorry, no offense to you guys." At first Xiumin looked over at Kyungsoo then at the ground scrunching his eyebrows, 'but...I have red hair.' he thought to himself. Maybe that guy had rattled Sehuns' brain more than it looked like on the outside. "Well, I'm sorry to hear about your little run in with an almost innocent bystander," Kyungsoo couldn’t help but chuckle a little as he spoke, "But what was it exactly that we're supposed to do on this scouting session. "We're going to see if we spot any of the reds gang treading on our territory in an unacceptable fashion." Xiumin just agreed with an okay sign before they started down the alley. An hour passed and so far nothing had stood out that seemed even slightly suspicious. They continued their walk down the alleyways; turning this way and that, making up their minds as they came to a new crossing. Xiumin turned to look at Sehun who seemed deep in thought, "Shall we turn back?" He asked. Taking a deep breath Sehun nodded, "Yeah, might as well, we've done what we came to do and there was nothing." As they started back Kyungsoo began to speak, "Do you think that since we didn't find anything today that maybe we'll be sent back tomorrow to-" He cut off suddenly with a shout and both Sehun and Xiumin turned to see a man dressed in all red lying atop Kyungsoo who struggled to rid himself of the person above him. The man quickly stood up, his eyes coming up to meet the other two who stood frozen for a split second before he rushed towards Sehun who easily deflected his attack. Suddenly two more dropped from above, neither wearing all red like the first, but all sporting a bandana that covered their nose and mouth, leaving only their eyes exposed. Kyungsoo had stood up again and immediately lunged at the man attacking Sehun; Kyungsoos' legs wrapping around the mans' waist and arms around his neck as he threw his body weight from side to side in order to throw the man off balance. When that person was distracted Xiumin quickly turned to face the next person who came right for him. Fists swinging fast, but not fast enough to the point where he couldn't dodge. He ducked this way and that, only being caught off guard when the man landed a swift kick to his gut. He looked over as he rolled to his feet, Sehun landing blow after blow as the man seemed to keep coming back for more, his fists almost the size of both Sehuns' hands together if not bigger. Yeah he had more weight but Sehun was tall and could easily deter the man with his feet due to his extremely long legs. Xiumin swung his leg, catching the other person fighting him off guard and they fell to the ground, without wasting a single second he swiftly climbed atop the person, his fist meeting flesh again and again, he could feel the crack of the mans' nose giving way as his knuckle made solid contact once more, blood covering his hands when he pulled back just enough to see if the man was out cold seeing as he hadn't moved. It was a big mistake. The man beneath him took this opportunity to bring his legs up and wrap them around the latters waist and pull him off. He stood up and immediately kicked Xiumin back down as he tried to stand, a swift kick to the ribs giving an extremely excruciating pain every time he tried to move. "Fuck." He whispered to himself, the space between them suddenly getting smaller until he felt a fist collide with his cheek. Rings. He felt them. A newfound cut now forming on his face and he could feel the blood beginning to trickle. A hand in his hair gripped tightly and pushed him down until the cheek that was cut was now pressed firmly against the ground, dirt coming in contact with the open wound and burning like none other. He felt the sting of tears in the corner of his eyes and he grabbed furiously at anything within his reach. Luckily his hand found the bandana around the mans' face and he pulled it, fist once again meeting the broken nose as the recoil shocked both of them. The man staggered backwards only to return to his feet. Xiumin took a quick look to the left, seeing Sehun caught in a head hold with his opponent; Kyungsoo on the other hand having an upper hand in the situation as he beat the man he was fighting over the head with an empty beer bottle. Quickly sprinting to Sehuns' aid, he could feel the presence of the other man following him. Taking action without even a second thought Xiumin jumped to the side giving himself leverage by kicking off the wall, smoothly sailing through the air to catch the man holding Sehun around the neck; his hold instantly letting the other fall from his grasp as he realized the new threat. Xiumin securely locked his arm around the latters neck, squeezing as tightly as he could. He could hear the man gasping for air as he clawed at the arm around his neck, fingernails biting into skin. Xiumin winced but didn't let go, he refused to let this opportunity slip away. Finally feeling consciousness leaving the man; or so he thought, he let his grip slip, only to realize it was a ploy. Realizing too late the man pulled him over his head and slammed his back right into the brick wall they were beside. The pain taking no time in letting him know that the blow was against a solid surface. Feeling a bit dazed he struggled to get to his feet, blood now dripping from his hairline thanks to the smack his head had landed against the wall before falling all the way to the ground. He fell back down, giving a perfect opportunity to the large man coming right for him. Xiumin managed to dodged the first fist that flew his way, but the other hit its mark right square in his face. Immediate pain followed, none too pleasant either. Another hit and he felt his jaw close to dislocation. One more hit and he would be totally out. Blood now dripped into his eyes, making it hard for him to assess the situation in order to escape this bloody brawl, his could halfway see out of the corner of his eye as Sehun was grabbed by his opponent and was thrown with full force against the wall, head coming in contact with the dark bricks, the hit obviously throwing him off balance as he staggered to straighten himself out. Kyungsoo lay on the ground not too far from there, the man above him repeatedly kicking him in the stomach before grabbing his shirt to drag him and toss him aside like nothing at all. As he turned his full attention back to the person infront of him his eyes immediately took attention to a couple shadows gathering on the same roof from which these people had come. 'Fucking shit.' his brain losing any other words to process in this situation. It had already been three against three in an uneven fashion, now there was more of them; if things continued as they were already then the three of them wouldn't make it out alive. He curled his fist just as the others jumped from the roof, catching the attention of those already in process of the fight. He planned that once the man turned back around to face him again he'd take a swing for him. What he didn't expect was that the people who came from the roof weren't attacking the three of them, but the others who had been attacking the unsuspecting party. He didn't move as he watched the other six people move into action, two taking on the person who had been kicking kyungsoo, two took on the one going after Sehun who was pinned against the wall and one tackled the one who had him cornered. When he had a clearer view he shifted to wipe the blood from his eye with the back of his hand. Just then one of the new fighters came over to him, kneeling down and lifting their hand to his face, gently touching the deep cut on his cheek, withdrawing instantly when he winced. "Are you alright?" He asked. Xiumin had never seen this man before, but judging by the fact that he had a red bandana tied around his upper left arm said a lot, he was one of the reds. His eyes reminded Xiumin of Chen if not a bit wider, his face thinner yet sharper and his skin also unblemished, the only big difference was that this man had bright blonde hair. He nodded in answer to the question, feeling too sore to move or speak; he couldn't remember the last time he had had the absolute shit beaten out of him like he had just now. Turning his head he looked over to see two of the other people helping Sehun limp over to a place in order to sit down, there was obviously some injury to his leg. The other two helping Kyungsoo to his feet and checking his wounds to see if anything had been broken. As Xiumin took in the other people he noticed that they all wore a red bandana; the one in front of him around the arm, another with dark brown hair had the red band sewn onto his beanie, the orange haired one had two around both is wrists, the shortest of them all wore one around his knee and the tallest had one hanging from the beltloop on his jeans. All of these people he had never seen before but it wasn't until he looked at the last person, the one wearing the red bandana over his nose and mouth that he realized he did know one of them, the person leaning over to currently help Kyungsoo as the others moved the unconscious bodies of the other men to the sides of the alleyway. His eyes weren't as prominent as he would say some of the other peoples' here were but the one thing that did stand out was his skin. Darker than anyone else he knew, that small hint gave it right away, this person could be none other than Kai. ***
