✉“You serious? You’re heading home for the rest of the summer?” Blair exclaimed as I tossed my purse into the front seat. “Come on, we are heading to San Diego for one big party before school starts. The beaches in Pismo are great and all but, San Diego!”  I laughed and shook my hair, “I’m good, have fun without me.” I paused, “Also punch Derek in the face for me. He cheated on Cathy again!” She groaned but agreed still demanding on the phone line why I wasn’t going to go again. “Fine, better text me though!” “I will! Gotta go, about to drive!” She said goodbye and I hung up. I stared at my reflection from the iphone in my hand. Truthfully I missed my family… as weird as that sounds. It was small but close. I grew up my whole life in San Francisco, San Carlos St. to be exact in a wonderful home. I was blessed with an interior designer as my Mom, and a Dad who was a CEO of an expanding clothing store.I started my jeep, the ignition roaring ready to take me on a 3 hour trip back to San Francisco, my home city. This spring break I would visit my mom in Dallas with her new fiancee Rick, he seemed like a cool guy what she told me. But that’s what she told me. Who knows what she told my Aunt, or even my little sister. Heather, my mind grew hazed when I thought of the bouncing sixteen year old girl. She took after our Mom. Heather was into crazy things, like that one time she died her red with Henna, or went Vegan for a whole year. This time she was into weird music, like really weird. It asian music, like Chinese and Korean. I think Japanese. Kpop that's what it was called. I shuddered when I remembered last spring break when I had to stay home because I wasn't feel well and we watched this drama called To The Beautiful You and Boys Over Flowers. It was awful.Hours flew by and begun to think what has changed since the last spring break. Maybe my Dad was dating someone, maybe Heather got a boyfriend, maybe she was actually normal! Or maybe we finally got a dog that Heather has been begging since forever. It was the year before Junior year and now I was finally getting started in my Major, English and International Studies. I was actually really excited I was one step closer of graduating and leaving and being done with school forever. The rural highways finally became bustling city, San Francisco. Giant buildings, rugged looking streets, parks, shops, tourist. This was home. I turned on the steep street pulling up to Carlos Street where I spotted the yellow house with the red door. The same door when I was five I smashed my head against. Good times.I parked in the drive way, double checking my parking break was on. I peered outside, it was blue skies but with sometimes chilly air from the bay. No too bad, it wasn’t bad enough I had to switch from my shorts to jeans. “Katieeeeeeeee!” The moment I stepped out of the car a flash of blonde sped past me and collided into my body. Heather. I could smell some sort of floral fruity scent wafting up to my nose. “I can’t believe you’re here it’s been forever!” Rolling my eyes I grabbed her by the shoulders and pushed her back before I waved my hand in front of my nose. “Lay off the perfume, ‘kay?” Her blue eyes widen and her mouth dropped, “H-how can you not like it’s the scent Minho made for Etude House!” Heather then stuck her wrist in front of my face, “Smell, smell, it smells so good it came two days ago.” I swatted her hand away as I grabbed my purse, “Whatever you say is this Min yo guys your boyfriend?” Clicking my keys I locked the car door. We began to walk towards the house entrance, where Heather was already on her phone.“Katie, it's Minho. Min, like mean, and ho, like-”“Don’t Heather,” I warned in a slight motherly tone.“I was gonna say hose! Geez…” I laughed and wrapped my arm around her shoulders. She grew. I was at a normal height of 5”5 she now stood almost to my height. “Anyways, do you got anything plan for this week?” She asked glancing at me.     Pushing my sunglasses to perch on my head. “No I don’t think so, why?”  She just hummed and shrugged her petite shoulders, “No reason…” I still gazed at her, she was most likely up to some late trip to Disneyland or something. Like a teen she was she quickly went back to her phone texting away. We climbed up the steps, I was already excited to be home. All the windows were open, this was going to be one relaxing summer. “Is Dad home yet?”  “Yup,” she said not looking up, she made a beeline to the living room where she fell back first on the couch kicking off her flip flops. “He’s in the study.”  I quickly bounded down the hallway, “Daaaad!” I said in sing songing voice. That’s when he popped out of the study room.  “There she is Katie Kat back in the flesh!” I laughed and hugged him tightly, “It’s been so long. We only saw you at spring break for what, two days? Not cool, dude, not cool.” I laughed at my Dad’s horrible teen language. “But how have you been?” He asked placing a fatherly hand on my shoulder as he guided me back to the kitchen. I nodded happily, “All is good, starting next year with my major, then before I know I’ll be graduating.”  He gave out a sad sigh, “but what has been going around here?” I glanced at the fridge to see Heather report cars, all A’s one B. “Wow she’s getting stellar graders.” My pride swell a bit, I was happy to see she was doing so well.  Dad nodded proudly, combing back his pepper black hair, “She loved Biology right now, having a bit trouble in English.” I laughed ironically, “Maybe you can tutor here,” He got a glass of water and began to take a sip. “But what are the plans for summer, anything exciting?”  I shook my head and reached in the fridge grabbing some drink that had Mango and Aloe in it and took a swig of the cold juice. “Nothing, relaxing. Goodness I need relaxing.” That’s when I saw Heather blonde head peep into the kitchen from the dining room. “Hey kiddo we were just gossiping about,” she stuck her tongue out but stepped further in.  “Dad… did you tell her yet?” She was bouncing awkwardly, in her right hand clasped were folded papers. “Tell me what?” I asked looking at the both of them. My dad gave a sheepish look as he got up, taking off his glasses and fluttering with his hair. “Heather has been getting a 3.5 this whole year so I just got her something that she would like, that she was begging me, but I am going to be out of town-” “Dad..” I said in a warning tone. I was not liking where this was going. Heather now fully stepped in with the papers in front of her face covering her wide smile. “I told him if he could get me tickets to this convention of sorts.” She shifted from foot to foot. “You mean your Kpop stuff?” I asked bluntly before crossing my arms. “Whatever happened to a new phone like every other kid, or a dog, how about a dog. You’re sixteen how about a car?” My Dad hushed me and continued, “See I am going to be out of town and the next adult is…” “No way you are not dragging me to this… this cult!”  “Katie!” My dad said and I just huffed. My eyes went to Heather she looked really upset, and she already bought the tickets and most likely booked the hotel also. I could even swear there were tears in her eyes. I mean if she liked something this much the extent to buy fifty dollar tickets and wait endlessly to see these guys. “I guess…” I trailed off before running a hand through my dark brown hair, “I guess it wouldn't be so bad…” “Ah!” Heather screeched before she rammed herself into me, “ I can’t believe you said yes! Thank you thank you! I love you! SARANGHAEYO!”  I cringed at the terrible Korean at the end but I patted her on the back before she let go. I actually knew Korean due to the major I was going in for college. “You and my friends and I are going to have such an amazing time!”  “Whoa friends?!” Dad just gave an exciting wave, “No one said others of you, hey! Hey!” In that instant her two best friends Alexia and Lynn busted in, "Oh my god how many of you are there," I whispered terrified. “We're going Hallyu!” They shouted together before they dragged me into this hug fest. I was surrounded by three star struck girls and they pranced around me.  What did I just say yes to!? I looked up at my Dad with wide eyes of anger. All I could do was bring my hand to my neck and made the comical illusion of the slit throat then pointed to him. He just held his hands up before giving me thumbs up. This was going to be a long weekend. ✉
