Sunflower Stars for May. it was august when i first saw herand may when we actually met;i reached her through broken chords,the nervous stutter of fingers on ivory. she asked me to become a violinist, to entice notes from her ivory ribs; i tried, and now she says she'll be beautiful forever (i still don't understand). sometime in winter, when notesbecome shaky trust just strong enoughto break heartstring barriers, shetells me why she's half-shattered glass. i come from a land where money and talent don't mean nothing if you ain'tlike them window china dolls, she tells me, and i think she must be lying. lying isn't something she can't do,but listening is my A+ amongst alist of my other B- personality traits,and so for her, i try to ace this class. her momma said she 'ain't pretty no more'; she cries 'cos never found out why, and i wonder if her voice was always this painful to listen to. blossoms are blinking pink eyelashes like it's not almost halloween, when she asks me why she isn't goodenough for her
