In his awareness, the distant crunch of a twig breaking was as apparent as a cymbal crashing in his ear, but as it was, the sound was barely loud and close enough to be heard over his breathing. He froze, his heart rate picking up even more than it had before and he clutched hard at the tree he had stopped by, uncaring of the broken bark that dug into his palms. What should he do? Run? No, that would alert whatever it was to his presence. No. he would wait, stay calm. If he leaned still against the tree maybe it wouldn’t care about him.
