Searching for My Soul
Prologue Back in 2001, the sun was shining through the bedroom, illuminating the desk which was placed in front of the window sill. A innocent girl, at the age of 12, sat there staring at the abundance of letters that laid there in front of her. Tears formed around her innocent eyes as she picks up the most recent of letters, or rather the last one. It had been months since he last wrote to her. After she responded to his letter, she never heard from him again. It started around a year, when this girls middle school started up a pen pal program for their students. It was to allow the students here to learn culture from others around the world as well as other students from other countries improve their English. She had received a letter from a South Korean teenage boy named “Lee.” Of course it was his last name. For some reason he couldnt give his first name to her, but she respected his wishes and never tried to push the subject. Lees letters were short, cryptic, but beautiful. He had described his country, city and all of its wonders. In his letters, there was such there was such passion, and when he spoke to her, he was so sweet and caring that she could feel herself falling for him. Just a childish crush, but it made her warm and fuzzy inside. It took her a lot of courage to send her letter to him containing her feelings, but she did it nonetheless. Months had passed, and she had receive no response from Lee. Now she sits by her desk, tears streams down her face, hand clutching his last letter to her, wondering. Why wont he respond to me? How could I be so stupid to confess? Why does this hurt so much? Finally, she stood up and walked over to her bookshelf and carefully slips the letter inside the pages of her favorite book, So Far From The Bamboo Grove. As she wiped her tears away as she headed to her bedroom door... “XIAO MAI!” I snap back to reality when I heard my best friend call out my name. Turning from my place on the windowsill, I looked at her. “What?” “The staff member just called out you number, time for you to go in.” Oh that’s right, Im sitting in the waiting room for the 2007 SM Global Auditions. And apparently, Its time for me to step in with a bunch of people and attempt to get into one of the biggest entertainment company in South Korea. As I headed toward the door, my friend calls out to me. “Xiao Mai, Hwaiting!” She pumps her fist into the air, and I gave a nervous chuckle. I have no idea why I started think of Lee and his letters, it had nothing to do with this audition. I shook the thought out of my head. Maybe I was remembering the past, because I was starting my life anew. I took a deep breath, placed my sweetest smile on my face and stepped through the judges door.
